The Akron Zips (1-1, 0-0 MAC) will be trying to pick up their first road win of the season when they face the Tennessee Volunteers (2-0, 0-0 SEC) on Saturday night. The Zips are coming off a 52-0 loss to Michigan State as 34.5-point underdogs. The Volunteers are coming off a 34-27 win over Pittsburgh as 6-point favorites.

Tennessee won the lone meeting between the two teams 47-26 in 2012.

Zips Looking For Upset

The Zips followed up their season-opening win over St. Francis with a blowout loss to Michigan State in their last game. They will try to bounce back from the loss with a win over the Volunteers, which will give them their second win in their last three games and likely knock the Volunteers out of the top 25.

Akron has struggled offensively, averaging 15 points per game through two games. They are throwing for 244.5 yards and rushing for 60 yards per game.

D J Irons completed 69 percent of his passes for 123 yards before leaving the game with an injury. He also had seven carries for 30 yards. Jeff Undercuffler Jr. completed 50 percent of his passes for 80 yards. Cam Wiley had 10 carries for 30 yards, while Daniel George had four catches for 44 yards.

Akron didn’t play well defensively in their first two games, giving up 37.5 points per game. They haven’t been able to stop the run and will need to figure out a way to do so if they want to pull off the upset.

Volunteers Going For Third Consecutive Win

The Volunteers are off to a great start after winning their first two games, which includes an impressive road win over 17th-ranked Pittsburgh. They will try to keep the momentum going with a win over the Zips, which will give them their third win in a row.

Tennessee has played well offensively, averaging 46.5 points per game through two games. They are throwing for 388 yards and rushing for 154.5 yards per game.

Hendon Hooker completed 64 percent of his passes for 325 yards and two touchdowns. Jaylen Wright had nine carries for 47 yards, while Cedric Tillman had nine catches for 162 yards and one touchdown.

Tennessee has played well defensively, giving up 18.5 points per game. They’ve done well against the run and the pass and will need to keep it up if they want to get the win.

Rating:

The Vols are facing an Akron team that has struggled to run the ball through their first two games, which works in their favor because they’ve been very good against the run. The only bright spot Akron had on offense was quarterback DJ Irons, who played well in their first two games. But, he went down with an injury against the Spartans and is expected to miss this game, leaving Jeff Undercuffler Jr. as their projected starter. The junior struggled against the Spartans and isn’t very accurate. The Vols have a very good pass defense and they’re opportunistic, with three interceptions and two fumble recoveries in their first two games. They’ve also done a good job generating pressure and had three sacks in their last game, so expect them to make life miserable for Undercluffler Jr. in this game. The Zips have been unable to stop anyone defensively, giving up more than 35 points per game. They’ve done a decent job against the pass but they have one of the worst run defenses in the country, so expect the Volunteers to keep the ball on the ground and make quick work of them. Go with Tennessee to cover the spread.

Prediction: Tennessee Volunteer -47.5

Rating:

The Zips struggled offensively in their first two games, averaging 15 points per game. They don’t run the ball well and will be forced to throw the ball a lot with a backup quarterback against a defense that has been aggressive and forces a lot of turnovers, so expect them to be held under 10 points in this game. The Volunteers are averaging 46.5 points per game through their first two games and will have their way offensively in this game because the Zips have been unable to stop the run. However, they will have a big lead going into the first half and will take their foot off the gas in the second half to keep their players healthy for their game against Florida, and won’t score enough points to push the score over the total.
