Charlotte 49ers (2-0) vs. Georgia State Panthers (0-2)

The Charlotte 49ers will look to keep their undefeated season alive as they take on the Georgia State Panthers on Saturday. Charlotte has opened the season with two big victories, including a 31-28 victory over Duke on September 3. Georgia State has lost both of their first two games in a decisive fashion, including being crushed by North Carolina on Saturday, 59-17.

The Panthers enter as 4.0-point favorites. Georgia State defeated Charlotte in the most recent contest between these teams, a 28-0 victory back in September 2017. The Panthers won the only other recent contest, winning 23-20 in September 2015.

49ers Strike Gold Against Bulldogs

The Charlotte 49ers scored 14 points in each of the first two quarters on their way to a decisive 38-10 victory over Gardner-Webb. It was the ground game that led the attack, pumping out 306 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. ChaVon McEachern led the way with 74 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Chris Reynolds threw for 103 yards and rushed for 60 more, combining for two scores.

Charlotte is averaging 34.5 points and 476.0 yards per game. The ground attack has been dominating, averaging 230 yards per contest. No one player has been "the man" for this team. Calvin Camp leads the 49ers with 107 yards and a touchdown, averaging 6.7 yards per carry. McEachern is second with 97 total yards, tied with Reynolds who also has 97 yards.

Reynolds has been solid at the quarterback position, completing 61.7% of his passes for 427 yards and four scores. His leading target has been Victor Tucker with 12 receptions for 166 yards. Grant DuBose has been a deep threat, making six catches for 164 yards and two TDs.

The defense has been solid for the 49ers. They are allowing 19 points and 397 yards per game. The 49ers have five sacks and three fumble recoveries. Markees Watts leads the team with 14 tackles and two sacks.

Tar Heels Pull Away with Dominating Second Half

The North Carolina Tar Heels blew open a 24-10 halftime lead, putting up 35 points in the second half in a 59-17 victory over Georgia State. It was the difference in the passing games for these teams, as the Panthers recorded just 90 yards through the air while North Carolina had 406. Quarterback Cornelious Brown completed 12 of 26 passes for 68 yards and an interception.

The numbers for both the Georgia State offense and defense have not looked good. The team is averaging 13.5 points and 224 yards per game. Brown has completed 52.2% of his passes for 197 yards, averaging just 98.5 yards per game. Jamari Thrash easily leads the team in receptions with nine for 105 yards. The team has yet to throw a touchdown pass this season.

The defense is allowing 51.0 points and 481.5 yards per game. Jordan Veneziale leads the team with 18 tackles. Blake Carroll leads the team with 1.5 of the Panthers’ two sacks this season. The team has no interceptions and one fumble recovery.

Insiders Status:

Georgia State enters as the favorites in this contest but this team has done nothing to deserve that recognition in my opinion. They have had two solid opponents to start the season, and have been absolutely dominated. I get the loss to North Carolina, but putting up just 10 points against Army while being steamrolled on the ground does not bode well for this team.

The 49ers are a team that loves to stick to the ground. That 230 yards per game average rushing are huge, because that is the type of game plan that Army used as well. Charlotte is going to burn out the clock, as they dominate in this contest.

Prediction: Take Charlotte at +4 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I do not know exactly what offense the oddsmakers are seeing for the Panthers, but this is not a team putting up 35 points in this game. I am realistic about it. I am not expecting the 49ers to dominate as they did against Gardner-Webb, but they only gave up 28 to Duke, a comparable opponent to Georgia State.

Consider that the 49ers gave up 53 points to Duke last season and just 28 to them this year. This is a very much improved defense, which is going to keep scoring down and help lead Charlotte to the victory.

Take Charlotte to win, 31-17.

Prediction: under 63.5 (-110)
