SMU will be looking to stay unbeaten when it travels to Louisiana Tech on Saturday afternoon. The Mustangs dominated Abilene Christian in its opener and then they blew out North Texas last week. Louisiana Tech lost a thriller to Mississippi State to open the season and then picked up a shaky win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Mustangs hoping to stay unbeaten

SMU is off to a nice start in 2021. The Mustangs dominated Abilene Christian in a 56-9 final to open the season, scoring 28 points in the second quarter. They added a 35-12 win over North Texas last week. The Mean Green kept it close for a half, going into the break trailing 7-6. It was all SMU from that point, as it outscored the visitors 28-6 in the second half. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw for 312 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Mordecai completed a 62-yard pass to Rashee Rice in the second quarter and the Mustangs led for the remainder of the game.

The veteran quarterback completed 21 of 33 attempts, but he also threw two interceptions. Running back Ulysses Bentley IV rushed 10 times for 141 yards. SMU dominated on the ground, tallying 226 total rushing yards. Mordecai has completed 45 of 63 attempts for 628 yards and an 11-to-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio this season. Bentley IV is averaging 9.5 yards per carry. Senior wide receiver Danny Gray has caught nine passes for 159 yards and three scores, while Rice has added six caches for 134 yards. Freshman safety Isaiah Nwokobia has picked off two passes to get off to a nice start to his collegiate career.

Bulldogs squeak past Southeastern Louisiana

Louisiana Tech already had one shot at a marquee win this season, but it came up short. The Bulldogs led Mississippi State by 20 points early in the fourth quarter of their season opener, but they allowed 21 points in the final 12 minutes. Louisiana Tech scored 34 unanswered points after falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter. It forced four turnovers, but it was unable to hang onto the lead down the stretch. The Bulldogs might have had a bit of a hangover effect against Southeastern Louisiana last week, as they barely pulled out a 45-42 win. They never trailed, but they allowed their opponent to hang around for the entire game.

Senior quarterback Austin Kendall has completed 61.9% of his attempts for 486 yards and three touchdowns this season. He completed 19 of 27 attempts for 217 yards last week. Senior running back Marcus Williams Jr. has carried the ball 31 times for 120 yards, averaging 3.9 yards per carry. He struggled against Mississippi State, but he bounced back with 18 attempts for 99 yards against Southeastern Louisiana. Freshman Bub Means is off to an excellent start, catching five passes for a team-high 131 yards during his first two games. He had a 72-yard strike against Mississippi State.

Insiders Status:

Louisiana Tech has proven that it can compete with talented teams. This a huge spot for the fan base, as they do not get to host marquee programs very often. SMU ended up winning last week’s game by a decent margin, but it struggled during the first half. Louisiana Tech is capable of taking advantage of a slow start by its opponent. I am going to excuse last week’s performance, as the Bulldogs were in a sandwich spot. They were coming off a heartbreaking loss and had a big game on deck. I expect a focused effort from start to finish in this game.

Prediction: Louisiana Tech +13

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

This should be one of the highest-scoring college football games of the week. SMU has been dynamic on offense so far, averaging 45.5 points per game. It is facing a Louisiana Tech defense that is off to a slow start. The Bulldogs are going to put up points, though. They had no problem scoring a ton of points against a team that was one of the SEC’s best defensive teams last season. SMU does not have nearly as much talent as Mississippi State, so it is going to allow some points in this game. Louisiana Tech has gone over the total in both of its games so far this year.

Prediction: Over 66
