Troy Trojans (1-1) vs. Southern Miss Golden Eagles (1-1)

Two teams looking to get above .500 square off when the Troy Trojans take on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles. Troy is coming off a tough loss against Liberty last Saturday, 21-13. Southern Miss dominated Grambling State, 37-0.

Troy enters the contest as 10.5-point favorites. These teams last faced each other in September 2019 when Southern Miss pulled out a 47-42 victory. The Trojans won the only other recent contest between these teams, defeating the Golden Eagles in September 2016, 37-31.

Liberty Hangs on to Down Troy

The Trojans were able to pull within eight, scoring with 1:10 left in the contest to make it a 21-13 game, but could get no closer. Troy struggled on offense, recording just 13 first downs and 232 total yards of offense, including only 21 on the ground. The time of possession was a huge factor, as Liberty held the ball for 38:59.

Troy is averaging 34.0 points and 348.0 yards per game. Quarterback Taylor Powell has been solid for the team, completing 67.3% of his passes for 442 yards and three TDs. He has a couple of big targets in Luke Whittemore and Tez Johnson, who have combined for 14 receptions for 239 yards and a score.

The running game is led by Kimani Vidal with 26 carries for 119 yards and a touchdown. B.J. Smith has been a solid backup, carrying the ball 15 times for 71 yards and two TDs.

The Trojans are allowing 12.0 points and 264.0 yards per game. This is a solid defense with seven sacks and four interceptions already this season. Leading tackler Will Choloh leads the team with 3.5 sacks and 13 tackles. Four other players have at least 10 tackles. Zion Williams has two interceptions this season.

Golden Eagles Soar over Grambling

The Southern Miss defense was dominating, allowing nine first downs and 141 yards in a decisive 37-0 victory over Grambling State University. That allowed a bruising ground game to dominate for the Golden Eagles, producing 290 yards on the ground and holding the ball for 31:03.

Southern Miss is averaging 22.0 points and 348.5 yards of total offense per game. Trey Lowe III has done a great job at the quarterback position, completing 54.8% of his passes for 232 yards and a touchdown. However, it has been the spectacular play of running back Frank Gore who has been the big story. Gore has 243 yards on 40 carries, a monstrous 6.1 yards per carry average.

The defense is allowing 15.5 points and 220.5 yards per game. The Golden Eagles defense has produced five sacks, an interception and a fumble recovery. Malik Shorts has been spectacular, leading the team with 10 tackles. Josh Carr is the leader in sacks with 2.5 and is tied with eight others for the second-most tackles on the team.

Oddsmakers are high on this Trojans team. I will admit that this team has some weapons, but coming off a 5-6 season, there is a little too much hype especially against a conference opponent like Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles closed out last season with a 45-31 victory, and were 2-2 over their final four games, losing both of those contests by three points. This is a team with a lot of moxie, and they could be a real challenge for the Trojans to contain.

I think Troy pulls out the victory here, but 10.5 points is a lot. These teams have only faced each other twice in the last six seasons, and both of those contests were decided by less than a touchdown. This game is going to be a lot closer than many believe.

Prediction: Southern Miss at +10.5 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

This is a battle between two teams that have gone under in many of their most recent contests. The Trojans have gone under in six of their last seven on the road and 10 of their last 15 overall. The Golden Eagles have gone under in six of their last seven, and four of their last five at home.

These are two teams with credible enough defenses. Combined these teams are allowing 27.5 points per game while averaging 56.0 points per game combined. This contest will come close to that magic 51, but will fall short of that.

Take Troy to win, 28-21.

Prediction: under 50.5 (-106)
