The Virginia Cavaliers (2-1, 0-3 ATS, 0-3 O/U) take on the Syracuse Orange (3-0, 3-0 ATS, 2-1 O/U) in an ACC battle on Friday night. The Cavaliers rebounded from a loss to Illinois with a home win against Old Dominion in their previous action (16-14 win). The Orange recorded a home victory against Purdue last week to remain undefeated. These foes last met in 2015.

Virginia Avoids Upset in Second Win

The Virginia Cavaliers are targeting a second consecutive win. They won the season opener 34-17 against Richmond but were 3.5-point dogs in an ugly 24-3 road loss against Illinois in week two. Virginia played stifling defense in a 16-14 home win against Old Dominion last week in a clash that had UVA as nine-point favorites. The Cavaliers have covered in one of their three games.

Brennan Armstrong hasn’t been a huge threat so far. He only recorded 180 passing yards against Illinois followed by 284 yards on a 54% completion efficiency against ODU last week. The senior QB has accrued 710 passing yards and a 2:3 TD to INT ratio in three games. The Cavaliers running game has been strong. Perris Jones did not play last season and has been productive, leading the team with 186 rushing yards on an average of 5 yards per carry.

UVA has three receivers with at least 100 yards on the season led by Keytaon Thompson. The senior WR had a season-best 118 yards last week and is up to 235 receiving yards. The Virginia offense has struggled to generate offense in the air but could be in for a breakout game against a subpar pass defense.

The Cavaliers' defense is solid. They limited Old Dominion to only 289 total yards. The pass defense has especially been an asset, standing 46th in the FBS, while the rush defense is 82nd. Virginia is scoring an average of only 17.7 points, ranking them 117th. The defense is limiting opponents to 18.3 points, positioning them 39th in the country.

Syracuse Remains Perfect

The Syracuse Orange remains perfect. They were 5.5-point dogs in a stunning 31-7 upset home win against Louisville in the season opener and clobbered UConn 48-14 in the next one. The Orange were narrow 1.5-point favorites in a wild 32-29 home win against Purdue last week. They have exceeded expectations and have covered the points in all three games. The Orange even received a few votes in the AP Top 25.

Garrett Schrader is playing well. The junior QB wasn’t quite as sharp last week, connecting on 13 of 29 passes, but has 709 passing yards with a perfect 8:0 TD to INT ratio in three games. He is mobile and has 201 rushing yards.

The Orange will run more than pass. They utilized several RBs including Sean Tucker who has eclipsed 100 rushing yards in two out of his three games. The superstar sophomore now has 254 rushing yards. Oronde Gadsen II had his best performance last week, bringing in 112 receiving yards. The senior has collected a team-leading 193 receiving yards. The Syracuse offense has scored at least 30 points in all three clashes.

The Orange defense has been their top strength so far. While, they struggled against the pass last week, allowing 415 passing yards, the unit was stellar in the first two games. They currently rank 86th against the pass and 35th against the run. Syracuse is averaging 37 points, landing them 43rd overall. The defense is allowing an average of 16.7 points, good for 32nd in the FBS.

Rating:

Virginia has an outstanding defense and can keep this one within a touchdown. The Cavaliers have allowed 24 or fewer points in all three games and I am surprised this spread is at 10. They held an Old Dominion team who beat Virginia Tech to only 14 points last week. Syracuse QB Garrett Schrader has been solid but will have a challenge against a Cavaliers defense that is limiting foes to only 197 passing yards per game. Despite the win, Schrader only converted on 13 of 29 pass attempts last week.

Furthermore, UVA has a good QB in Brennan Armstrong who has yet to play to his potential this season. The senior accumulated 4449 passing yards and 30 TD passes in 2021 and should have his best game of the season against an Orange pass defense that is squandering an average of 242 passing yards per game, landing them 86th in the FBS.

Prediction: Virginia Cavaliers +10.5

I expect a defensive battle. The Cavaliers are a low-scoring team. Part of that is because they usually run a slower offense. The squad definitely relies on defense to win games and it’s no surprise the under has cashed in all three games.

In addition, the Orange have a run-heavy offense that leads to long possessions that drain the clock. They have only attempted a pass in 41% of their total plays which is one of the lowest. I believe their current offensive production is unsustainable as a result. Virginia has allowed 17 or fewer points in two of their three games and has a pretty good pass rush, collecting eight sacks in three games.

Prediction: Under 52.5
