The Charlotte 49ers (1-3, 1-3 ATS, 3-1 O/U) battle the South Carolina Gamecocks (1-2, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U) in an inter-conference bout on Saturday evening. The 49ers earned their first win in a road triumph against Georgia State. The Gamecocks were clobbered by #1 Georgia last week. These foes last met in 2009.
Charlotte Registers First Win
The Charlotte 49ers are seeking their second victory of the season. The first three games of the season were ugly, losing each game by double-digits. They lost to William & Mary of the FCS and dropped a 56-21 home decision to Maryland two weeks ago. Fortunately, the 49ers found a groove last week. They were huge 20-point dogs in a 42-41 road victory to Georgia State. The 49ers' defense has been exploited and has covered the spread once.
Charlotte welcomed back Chris Reynolds after missing the last two games. The senior QB had 196 passing yards in the opener and was dominant last week, accumulating 401 passing yards and three touchdowns. That’s a total of 597 yards and a 7:1 TD to INT ratio in two games.

Shadrick Byrd hasn’t been able to break out on the ground. The sophomore RB only has 162 rushing yards in four games. The 49ers have a skilled WR unit, offering three players with at least 200 yards. Grant DuBose is having an outstanding season, bringing in 319 receiving yards. The Charlotte offense is much better with QB Reynolds back in action.
The 49ers' defense is stumbling in a big way. They have squandered at least 30 points in all three games after squandering 596 yards last week. The pass defense is marked 128th while the rush defense is at 129th. Charlotte is scoring an average of 25 points, ranking them 98th. They are allowing an average of 45.3 points, pegging them 129th in the country.
South Carolina Falls to Arkansas, Georgia
The South Carolina Gamecocks are glad to see a light opponent this week. They were able to collect a convincing win against Georgia State in the season opener but then had to play #16 Arkansas, resulting in a 44-30 road loss. Next, they had the task of playing #1 Georgia last week, losing by an ugly 48-7 score in a game that had SC labeled as 25-point dogs. The Gamecocks have covered in only one of their three bouts.
Spencer Rattler has been inconsistent so far. The former Oklahoma QB had 376 passing yards against Arkansas but only recorded 118 yards last week. He has 721 passing yards with two touchdowns but has tossed a whopping five picks already. SC shares the duties on the ground with Juju McDowell and MarShawn Lloyd. McDowell led the way with 33 yards last week and leads the squad with 82 rushing yards.
The Gamecocks have a strong receiving core, featuring Atwane Wells Jr. who has made 15 receptions for a total of 244 yards in three games. The SC offense will pass frequently and should have no problem finding open field against a poor Charlotte pass defense.
The Gamecocks' defense has been exploited in back-to-back games. They squandered a whopping 547 total yards against Georgia and stand 57th against the pass while the rush defense has especially been an issue, landing 125th. South Carolina is scoring an average of 24 points on the season, ranking them 100th. The defense has conceded an average of 35 points, pegging them 113th in the FBS.
Best Bets for this Game
Full-Game Side Bet
The Charlotte 49ers have their #1 QB, Chris Reynolds, back for this one. This is good news after the senior missed two out of the last three games. Reynolds posted a 26:9 TD to INT ratio in 2021 and had a dazzling 401 passing yards in the 49ers' stunning 42-41 road win at Georgia State last week. Reynolds is key as South Carolina allowed 339 passing yards last week.
Furthermore, the Gamecocks' defense can be solved. They have squandered over 40 points in two consecutive games. While these were against ranked foes, the rush defense was exploited last season and ranks 125th in three games this year. Charlotte is generating offense, scoring at least 21 points in three consecutive games which will make covering this large spread very difficult for SC.
Full-Game Total Pick
I expect a shootout. The 49ers' top strength is definitely the offense. They were able to score over 20 points in back-to-back games without their #1 QB and scored 42 last week with Reynolds back in action. Charlotte will pass frequently. They have attempted a pass in 63% of their total plays.
In addition, South Carolina has a strong offense propelled by former Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler. They accumulated 376 passing yards against Arkansas in week two and should feast on a Charlotte pass defense that is pegged 128th in the FBS. The over is also 5-1 in the 49ers’ last six games overall.
