Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns (2-1) vs. UL Monroe Warhawks (1-2)

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns head to Malone Stadium in Monroe, Louisiana, in Week 4 of the 2022 college football season to take on the UL Monroe Warhawks. These two Sun Belt foes open their conference play, and the Ragin’ Cajuns aim for their fifth consecutive victory over the Warhawks.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are listed as 9-point road favorites. They’ve covered in eight of their last nine visits to Monroe along with a push. The Warhawks are -330 moneyline dogs, while the totals sit at 51.0 points.

Louisiana’s FBS-leading win streak just came to an end

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns suffered a surprising 33-21 defeat at the Rice Owls in Week 3, stopping their FBS-leading winning streak at 15 games. Playing as 12-point road favorites, the Ragin’ Cajuns couldn’t cope with the Owls’ defense, racking up just 175 total yards and nine first downs. Louisiana’s defense picked off TJ McMahon three times but also allowed the Owls’ signal-caller to throw for 303 yards and three touchdowns after spending nearly 42 minutes on the field.

"That wasn't a very good showing for us to say the least," UL head coach Michael Desormeaux said. "Our defense played great, they kept us in the game the whole time. We just can't leave the defense out there the entire game. We didn't play good enough on offense and I have to call it better.”

The Ragin’ Cajuns’ QB situation is still a two-man competition. Sophomore Chandler Fields is officially a starter under center and has gone 30-of-54 for 352 yards, six touchdowns, and an interception through the first three games in 2022, while junior Ben Wooldridge has completed 25 of his 38 passing attempts for 313 yards and a couple of scores.

Fields had a bad day in the office at Rice, finishing 7-of-14 for just 38 yards, a TD, and a pick. Wooldridge was 6-of-14 for 76 yards, while junior RB Chris Smith led the backfield with six carries for 39 yards and a touchdown. The Ragin’ Cajuns are averaging 29.3 rushing attempts per game, enough for the 14th-fewest in the country. At least, their run D is doing a great job, surrendering 99.3 yards per game and 3.2 per carry.

The Warhawks suffered another heavy defeat in Week 3

The UL Monroe Warhawks sandwiched a 35-7 home victory over the Nicholls Colonels with a couple of heavy losses to start the 2022 CFB season. After losing at the Texas Longhorns 52-10 in Week 1, the Warhawks got trounced by the No. 2 Alabama Crimson Tide 63-7 in Week 3. UL Monroe racked up just 169 total yards against Bama’s mighty defense while surrendering 509 in a return. By the end of the first quarter, the Warhawks were down 28-0.

"It went like most people thought it would go," Louisiana-Monroe coach Terry Bowden said. "They were just too good for us in every phase of the game. You could watch the video and say that's kind of what you're stepping into, but you still prepare for them not to play well or something to go wrong.”

Sophomore QB Chandler Rogers led the way for the Warhawks in that comfortable Week 2 victory against Nicholls. He tossed for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns while rushing eight times for 55 yards and a TD. Junior Malick Jackson has accounted for 110 yards and a couple of touchdowns on 34 carries through the first three weeks, and the Warhawks are tallying just 2.8 yards per rush.

Insiders Status:

It’s hard to judge the Warhawks’ form, as they’ve had to play a couple of heavyweights thus far. UL Monroe got beaten hard by both Texas and Alabama while showing little on the offensive end of the ball. I’m looking for another solid defensive performance from the Ragin’ Cajuns, while their offense can only play better than it did against Rice in Week 3, so give me the visitors and points.

The Ragin’ Cajuns are undefeated in their last eight road encounters with the Warhawks, going 7-0-1 ATS in the process. Back in 2020, Louisiana dropped 70 points on UL Monroe at Malone Stadium. This Ragin’ Cajuns team is still searching for its offensive identity, but its defense will make the difference.

Prediction: Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns -9.0 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The total has gone under in three of the previous four meetings between Louisiana and UL Monroe, though three of those four contests have produced 59 or more points in total. This time around, the line is a low one at 51.0 points, as the bookmakers don’t expect any fireworks from these two Sun Belt Conference rivals.

As I’ve mentioned above, the Ragin’ Cajuns are still trying to gel things on the offensive end, while their defense looks ready for the challenge. On the other side, the Warhawks will try to make amends in front of the home fans following a heavy loss at Alabama, so I lean toward the under. Six of the Warhawks’ last seven contests have gone under the total. Also, the under is 9-1 in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ last ten games against the Sun Belt Conference.

Prediction: Go under 51.0 points (-110)
