The Massachusetts Minutemen (1-2, 1-2 ATS, 1-2 O/U) battle the Temple Owls (1-2, 2-1 ATS, 1-2 O/U) in a week three bout on Saturday afternoon. The Minutemen earned their first win of the season after defeating Stony Brook in their previous action. The Owls lost to Rutgers last week. These foes last met in 2017 in a game Temple won by a 21-17 score.

Minutemen Earn First Win of Season

The Massachusetts Minutemen enter this one with confidence. They were dealt two blowout defeats to begin the season, falling against Tulane, followed by a 55-10 defeat at Toledo. The squad rebounded with a convincing 20-3 home win against Stony Brook to cover the one-point spread. It’s nothing to be excited about considering Stony Brook plays in the FCS.

The Massachusetts offense is run-heavy. They have only attempted a total of 47 passes in three games. Gino Campiotti had a season-best 90 passing yards last week. The junior QB has 129 passing yards with a 1:3 TD to INT ratio in three games. Campiotto has added 195 yards on the ground.

Ellis Merriweather collected 76 rushing yards last week. The senior RB hasn’t broken out with any big runs, averaging 3.5 yards per rush. Tim Baldwin will see action as well. He has 133 yards. The Minutemen don’t have any receivers with 100 yards. Cameron Sullivan-Brown leads the way with only 63 receiving yards. The offense only scored 10 points in the first two games of the season and is averaging a meager 245 total yards per game.

The Minutemen's defense was exploited in the losses to Tulane and Toledo and were able to hold Stony Brook to only 333 yards. The pass defense is their top strength, landing 34th in the FBS while the rush defense is marked 106th. UMass is scoring an average of 13.3 points, pegging them 125th overall. The defense is squandering an average of 33.3 points, tabbing them 104th.

Temple Nearly Stuns Rutgers

The Temple Owls are 1-2 after three-game but have something to build on. They were 9.5-point dogs in a 30-0 loss to Duke in week one, followed by defeating Lafayette of the FCS. Last week, they were huge 19-point dogs in a narrow 16-14 home loss to a decent Rutgers team. The offense has struggled big time while the defense has been a bright spot. They have covered two of their three clashes.

The Owls had E.J. Warner under center last week. The freshman QB has fared well in his two games, collecting 388 passing yards and a 3:1 TD to INT ratio. Mathis is considered their #1 QB but did not play last week due to an undisclosed injury and is questionable. The sophomore had 83 passing yards in the season opener against Duke. Edward Saydee recorded 321 rushing yards in 2021 and but has not fared well so far, amassing 98 yards on an average of 3.8 yards per carry.

The Owls have three players with at least 100 receiving yards. Jose Barbon has surpassed 100 receiving yards in one of three games and leads the team with 172 receiving yards. The Temple offense lacks any big-time playmakers and has only averaged 285 total yards per game.

The Owls' defense has definitely been encouraging in the first three performances. They limited Rutgers to only 201 total yards and contained their potent running game. The unit ranks 14th against the pass and 47th against the run. Temple is scoring an average of only 14.7 points, pegging them 122nd overall. The defense is allowing an average of only 20 points, good for 47th in the FBS.

Insiders Status:

The Massachusetts Minutemen are having another disastrous season. They only registered one victory in all of 2021 and the only victory in three games this season was against FCS opponent Stony Brook. The Minutemen were demolished by 32 and 45 points respectively in their first two games against Tulane and Toledo.

Furthermore, Temple had an encouraging performance against Rutgers last week, losing by only two points in a narrow 16-14 score. The offense is poor but the defense has been stellar, limiting Rutgers to 201 yards. UMass has a non-existent passing offense and relies heavily on the running game however the Owls' rush defense contained Rutgers last week and are limiting opponents to 115 rushing yards per game.

Prediction: Temple Owls -8.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

This will be a defensive battle. This is a low total and for good reason. The Minutemen have generated very limited offense in their two games against FBS opponents, scoring just 10 points in their first two bouts and it's no surprise they rank at or near the bottom in all offensive categories.

In addition, Temple also has a poor offense. They were shutout against Duke in the season opener and only collected 14 points last week. The Owls' biggest output of 30 points was against an FCS opponent in Lafayette. The under is also 4-1 in the Owls’ last five non-conference games.

Prediction: Under 43
