The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will host the North Texas Mean Green in a Conference-USA matchup. Both teams come into this game with 1-2 records. According to the Conference USA Preseason Media Poll, Lousiana Tech was predicted to finish third in the CUSA West Division this year and is currently rated 84th in the country according to CBS Sports. North Texas was predicted to finish sixth in the Media Poll and is down to 116th in the CBS Sports rankings.

When these teams played last season, Louisiana Tech won 42-31 as a one-point road favorite.

Where is the offense?

In 2020, North Texas finished the year 4-6 with a 3-4 mark in Conference USA. The Mean Green led CUSA in total yards, rushing yards, passing yards, and points per game on offense and ranked dead last defensively in the same areas. Back this season are 17 starters, eight on offense and nine on defense. The biggest loss for North Texas was wide receiver Jaelon Darden, who left early for the NFL and was selected in the fourth round by the Houston Texans.

The North Texas Mean Green opened up the season with a 44-14 win as a 20-point favorite against the Northwestern State Demons, but things have gone downhill since. On September 11, North Texas lost 35-12 as a 22.5-point dog to rival SMU, and last week was embarrassed 40-6 as an 11-point dog to UAB. North Texas was outgained 407 to 220 in total yardage by the Blazers, in what was the worst yardage output by the Mean Green since November 23, 2019.

North Texas only managed to run for 121 yards on 44 attempts and quarterbacks Austin Aune and Jace Ruder only combined to throw for 99 yards on 34 total passes against UAB. The lone score of the game for North Texas came on a Ruder three-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to make the score 33-6 at the time.

LA Tech coming off loss on Hail Mary against SMU

Louisiana Tech is led by Skip Holtz, the son of legendary Notre Dame coach Lou Holtz. Skip has had a good career himself, with a 150-114 all-time record and 62-43 mark at Louisiana Tech since taking over in 2013.

Last season, the Bulldogs went 5-5 and 4-2 in Conference-USA. This year's team welcomed back five offensive and 10 defensive starters.

The Bulldogs began the year with a hard-fought 35-34 road loss as a 20.5-point underdog to Mississippi State. The Bulldogs won their second game 45-42 as an 11.5 point favorite against SE Louisiana.

Last Saturday, Lousiana Tech was a part of one of the week's top highlights, losing 39-37 as a 10.5-point home dog to SMU on a Hail Mary touchdown pass on the game's final play. Lousiana Tech quarterback Austin Kendall threw for 351 yards with four touchdowns and an interception in the game. Kendall is a senior who began his career with the Oklahoma Sooners back in 2016 and played for West Virginia in 2020 and 2021. This year she has thrown for 837 yards with seven touchdowns and three picks.

This is a one-sided matchup based upon how these teams have performed so far. North Texas is a horrendous defensive team that needs to put up a lot of points to win games. Louisiana Tech is only a couple plays away from being 3-0 this season and averaging 38.6 ppg, including a 34 point performance against SEC member Mississippi State. North Texas is only averaging nine points in its two games between FBS opponents this year, with the offense playing horrible the last two weeks.

Expect The Bulldogs to roll up the points in this one without North Texas having a consistent answer. Coming off of a heartbreaking loss on the game's final play against an SMU team that beat North Texas by 23 points earlier this year, I don't expect the Bulldogs to take this game lightly as they should be anxious to get back on the field. Take Lousiana Tech to cover big at home.

Prediction: LA Tech Bulldogs -11

As prolific as both of these offenses have been in recent history, only Louisana Tech's offense has been potent his season. I see the Bulldogs reaching the low 40s in points, with a big lead, and then being happy with running down the clock. On the other side, I don't think the North Texas offense is playing well enough to hit 24 points in this game. Although these programs are known to be able to light up the scoreboard, this head-to-head conference matchup has gone under the total in three of the last four seasons. I will take the under here with Lousiana Tech winning 42-21.
