A pair of Conference USA foes will square off on Saturday as UTEP Miners duke it out with the UTSA Roadrunners at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. The Miners enter this contest off a 27-20 home loss to New Mexico State, while the Roadrunners are off a 25-21 home win over Texas State. The Roadrunners won last year’s game on the road by a score of 31-14.
The Miners Are Off To a Rough Start
Many picked the Miners to be one of the worst teams in the nation this year and they have made those people look good so far. The Miners enter this game at 0-4 on the year and that includes a 20 home loss to Northern Arizona to start the year. Last week, they faced New Mexico State at home by a score of 27-20 and that was against an Aggies team that has really struggled in the early going. Now they will look to get their first win of the year, but UTSA is a solid team, despite their 1-3 record. The Miners did have 429 yards, including 235 yards on the ground against the Aggies, but they also had two fumbles and an INT. Kai Locksley hit 10/16 passes for 194 yards with a TD and an INT in the game. H has hit just 45.8% of his passes for 410 yards with a TD and a to INTs this year so far. He has a shot at a good game as UTSA is 112th in the nation against the pass.
Quadraiz Wadley rushed for 111 yards against the Aggies and he now leads the team in rushing with 283 yards and two TDs. They are 124th in the nation in passing and 72nd in rushing. The defense has not been good at all, especially against the run as they are 123rd in the land in that category. They allowed 155 yards against the Aggies on the ground, but they have a shot at a good showing against a UTSA team that is 124th in the land at running the ball. Their defense may be bad, but they are taking on a bad offensive team and that could give them a shot at a win. The Miners have averaged 13.5 ppg (130th) and they have allowed 33.2 ppg (103rd) on the year so far.
Roadrunners Take Down Texas State At Home
The UTSA Miners have did not have a great start to their year as they lost their first three games, but they were able to get their first win of the season last week against the Texas State Bobcats. It was not a great win, but it was a win nonetheless and they will now take aim at beating a UTEP team that just may be the worst team in the nation. They beat the Miners by a score of 31-14 last year and will look to do so again. The Roadrunners have had their issues on offense this year and they had just 272 yards of total offense against the Bobcats, including just 127 yards through the air. Cordale Grundy has hit just 54% of his passes on the year for just 579 yards with three TDs and two INTs. He could very well have a good showing against the 112th ranked pass defense in the nation.
The Roadrunners are just 113th in the nation in passing and just 124th in the nation in rushing. Leading their ground attack this year has been BJ Daniels, who has run for 199 yards and two TDs thus far. The defense has not been good for the Roadrunners so far, but we do note that their first three games of the season were all against Power-Five teams. They showed some strong defense against the Bobcats as they allowed them just 248 yards of total offense, including just 26 yards on the ground. That defense has a chance for another good showing against one of the worst offensive teams in the league. UTSA has averaged 17.2 ppg (123rd) and has allowed 37 ppg (114th).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The Miners have been a bad team in the early going, but the Roadrunners have been no prize either. I know that the Miners are one of the worst teams in the nation, but I feel that they will be able to keep this one close. They have a bad defense, but still, I don’t feel that the Roadrunners have enough on the offensive side of the ball to rout them. The Miners have also struggled on offense, but UTSA has not been very good on defense and they barely beat a poor Texas State team at home last week. Look for UTSA to win by no more than a TD.
Prediction: UTEP +10.5
Full-Game Total Pick
This one has the feel of a very low scoring game. Both defenses have been bad in the early going, but the offenses for both have been worse. The Miners are last in the nation in scoring putting up just 13.5 ppg so far, while the Roadrunners have averaged just 17.2 ppg and that is good for 123rd in the nation. Neither offense will be able to move the ball in this one. Last year’s game saw just 45 points scored and this one will not top 42 points.
Prediction: Under 47.5
Half-Time Side Pick
Neither team will pile up many wins this year, but the Roadrunners are still the far superior team and while their defense has struggled so far, we note that they have played three power-five teams in their first four games. They will have a good defense this year and the miners will have one of the worst offenses in the nation. UTSA by at least 14 at the break.
Prediction: UTSA -6.5
Half-Time Total Bet
A low O/U line for the first half of a college game. Still, I feel that we can get there, especially since the Miners have averaged just 7.6 ppg in the first half this year, while the Roadrunners have put up just 9.3 ppg by the break. 17-3 at the half sounds about right for this one.
Prediction: Under 22
