College Football action within the Big 12 on Saturday evening and we will see the 12th ranked West Virginia Mountaineers invade Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas to battle it out with the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Mountaineers won last year’s matchup at home by a score of 46-35.
The Mountaineers have started at 3-0 on the young campaign and are 1-0 in Big 12 play after crushing Kansas State 35-6. The Red Raiders check in at 3-1 overall, including 1-0 in league play and are off a 41-17 road win over Oklahoma State.
Mountaineers Off To A Good Start In Big 12
The West Virginia Mountaineers come in at 3-0 on the year and they are now 1-0 in the Big 12 after crushing Kansas State last week by a score of 35-6. This is a team that some had finishing in the bottom half of the Big 12 standings, but they have looked good so far. They began with a 26 point road win over Tennessee and followed it up with a 52-17 home win over Youngstown State. Now they look to keep it rolling against Texas Tech, but it will not be easy as Teck is off an easy road win over a very good Oklahoma State squad. The defense was very tough against the Wildcats last week as they held them to just 318 yards of total offense. The Wildcats have had their issues on offenses in the early going, but Texas Tech has had no such issues so far. The Mountaineers are 18th in the nation in total yards allowed and 2nd in points allowed, giving up just 12.3 ppg so far. This defense will be tested in this one.

The offense has been strong as well and is led by Will Grier, who has thrown for 1,117 yards with 14 TDs and three INTs. He leads a passing attack that ranks 3rd in the nation at 373.7 ypg. He could have a big game in this one as he will be facing a pass defense that ranks 110th in the nation. In last year’s game, Grier hit 32/41 for 352 yards with five TDs and one INT. He will need to have a similar game if they hope to grab the win in this one.
Red Raiders Stun Oklahoma State On The Road
The Texas Tech Red Raiders started their season with a 20 point loss to Ole Miss, but they have responded with three wins in a row, including a 41-17 road win over Oklahoma State last week. TT were double-digit dogs in the game. This team has not been that good on defense in the early going, but they really played well on that side of the ball against the Cowboys. They are 106th in the nation in yards allowed, but they gave up just 386 to a powerful Oklahoma State squad. They are 110th in the nation against the pass and held OSU to just 258 yards through the air in the game. I do not see them doing that against Grier in this one, but if they do, then they will have an excellent shot at winning this game.
The offense checks in as tops in the nation, putting up 621 ypg. They are also tops in passing at 435.8 ypg. Alan Bowman has been incredible so far as he has hit 72.1% of his passes for 1557 yards with 10 TDs and just two INTs in the early going. He is just a freshman folks. That has to be scary for the rest of the Big 12. It also has to be scary for a West Virginia team that has looked good on defense so far. The problem is that the Mountaineers have not faced an offense anywhere near the caliber of the one they will face in this one. We do note that the Raider Raiders outgained WVU 513-396 in last year’s game and still lost by nine.
Texas Tech is:
- 10-4 ATS in their last 14 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points.
- 19-8 ATS in their last 27 games on fieldturf
- The Over is 7-0 in their last 7 games after allowing less than 20 points in their previous game.
- Over is 5-0 in their last 5 games following a straight up win of more than 20 points
West Virginia is;
- 16-33-2 ATS in their last 51 games after accumulating more than 450 total yards in their previous game.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games after allowing less than 100 yards rushing in their previous game
- The Over is 6-2-1 in their last 9 games in September
- The Over is 5-2 in their last 7 games following an ATS win
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Can the Red Raiders keep it going after their huge win last week on the road? I think that they. This team is playing with a ton of confidence right now and their defense really played well last week. The Mountaineers have started their season at 3-0, but they have not really been tested in the early going. I think they will be tested in this one, especially their defense and they will fail that test. The Red Raiders have momentum and they are at home. I will look for them to pull the outright upset in this one.
Prediction: Texas Tech +3.5
Full-Game Total Pick
Last week, I thought that the OSU/ TT game would go way over the total, but it didn’t. I don’t feel that getting the over in this one will be a problem. These are two of the top three passings offenses in the nation and both will air it out a ton. That should lead to plenty of points. The Mountaineers have solid defensive numbers but have not faced an offense like this one just yet. The Red Raiders are 110th in the nation against the pass and will not be able to slow down the WVU passing game. Last week they did it against Freshman QB, but Grier is no freshman. Look for Grier and Bowman to put on a show in this one.
Full-Game Prop Bet
This will not be a low scoring game at all and both teams will get their fair share of points. The Red Raiders scored 41 points on the road last week and I feel that they should be able to get to at least 38 in this one. WVU is leading the nation in points allowed, but they have yet to face an offense the caliber of the one they will face today.
Prediction: Texas Tech Team Total Over 35.5
Half-Time Side Pick
The Mountaineers have the edge on defense in this one, but still, it is hard to outscore Texas Tech here at home. Their offense has been nearly unstoppable of late and should have good success against the Mountaineers in this one. WVU will score, but not enough to lead at the half.
Prediction: Texas Tech +1.5
Half-Time Total Bet
The game is still a day away and these teams have already put up 37 points. LOL Anyway, I see plenty of points in this one as these are two of the best and hottest offensive teams in the nation. Look for around 42 points at the break as the punters don’t even dress for the first half.
Prediction: Over 37
Half-Time Prop Prediction
These teams will start scoring the moment they get off the bus. Both are high powered offensive teams and both play at a very high tempo. we may see two scores in the first 4.5 of this one.
Prediction: Score In The First 4.5 Minutes – Yes
