It’s a matchup of teams from the East Division of the Big Ten in the Great Lakes State. The #6 Penn State Nittany Lions are on the road as they travel to face the Michigan State Spartans Saturday afternoon. Penn State comes in off a 28-21 win at home over #16 Michigan last Saturday night. Michigan State had a bye last week: they were drubbed 38-0 on the road by then-#8 Wisconsin in their previous game on October 12th. The Spartans own a 16-15-1 edge in the all-time series between the teams and have taken the last two: that includes a 21-17 road win in the most recent matchup on October 13, 2018.
Penn State prevailed at home over #16 Michigan last week to remain unbeaten and avenge a 42-7 pasting at the hands of the Wolverines in Ann Arbor last season. The Nittany Lions try to remain unbeaten heading into a game with #17 Minnesota next week. Penn State bolted to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter and hung on after Michigan made it a seven-point game twice, the last time with 8:48 to play. The Nittany Lions were outgained 417-283, gave up 26 first downs while recording 14 and were crushed 37:45 to 22:15 in time of possession in the contest. Penn State did force the game’s lone turnover: their strong start carried them to victory.
Michigan State had a bye last week and it may have come at a good time as the team had been drubbed in the previous two games. The Spartans were hammered by a combined 72-10 against Ohio State and Wisconsin as they try to regroup here. Michigan State was outgained 402-149 by Wisconsin in their latest loss. The Spartans gave up 22 first downs while picking up just seven and were wiped out by a 39:10 to 20:50 margin in time of possession. Michigan State turned the ball over twice, including a pick-six, while facing to record a takeaway in the game.
