NFL: Sunday, October 9, 2016 at 1:00pm EST

Line: Baltimore -3.5

Total: 46.5

The Baltimore Ravens will look to bounce back from their first loss as they host the Washington Redskins in week five action Sunday afternoon from M&T Bank Stadium. The Redskins defeated the Browns 30-21 last week, and the Ravens were edged 29-28 at home by the Raiders.

Cousins Tosses Three TD’s in Second Straight Win

The Washington Redskins forced three turnovers and did enough to get a 31-20 win over the Cleveland Browns this past Sunday. Kirk Cousins didn’t throw for the yardage we are used to seeing, throwing for 189 yards, but he did connect on 21 of his 27 passes for three touchdowns. The 28-year old quarterback has now thrown for 1272 yards with six touchdowns and four interceptions through four games. Running back Matt Jones had best performance of the season, rushing for 117 yards with a touchdowns and has now rushed for 60 or more yards in three consecutive games, and he will see a lot of action in this matchup  TE .Jordan Reed made his presence felt in this one, making nine grabs for a season-high 73 yards and two touchdowns. Washington finally had success in the red zone, scoring on four of their five entries to the red zone, after struggling in the red zone through the first three games. Washington’s offense has been productive, now scoring an average of 24.8 points per game, placing them 12th in the NFL.

The Redskins defense forced three fumbles, two of which were recovered and made an interception in an overall solid defensive effort against the Browns last Sunday. Josh Norman who struggled in the first few games, came up with his first interception of the season, and has deflected seven passes through four games. The Redskins are now conceding an average of 28 points per game, ranking them 26th overall.

Ravens Defense Struggles in Loss to Raiders

The Baltimore Ravens could not come up with the big stop late in the fourth quarter and the Raiders scores the go-ahead touchdowns with two minutes left to take the 29-28 lead and get the win. Joe Flacco attempted a whopping 52 passes, connecting on 32 of them, and threw for a total of 298 yards with one touchdown and zero interceptions. The 31-year old quarterback has now thrown for 1063 yards, but has thrown just three touchdowns with four interceptions this season. The Ravens running game has really struggled, so coach Harbaugh opted to go with Terrance West in place of Justin Forsett and West delivered, rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown. Overall the Ravens have to be disappointed they could not get a win against one of the worst defensive units in the NFL. Baltimore has only scored seven touchdowns through four games, and are now averaging 21 points per game, ranking them down at 20th overall.

The Ravens defense which had played so well through the first three games really struggled in this one, as Raiders QB Derek Carr threw four touchdowns. They did do a good job stuffing the Raiders running game, conceding only 62 yards on the ground. The Ravens are now allowing an average of 18 points per game, ranking them seventh overall.

The Washington Redskins are:

  • 4-0 ATS in their last 4 road games.

The Baltimore Ravens are:

  • 2-10-1 ATS in their last 13 home games.
  • 2-8-2 ATS in their last 12 games following a straight up loss.

I am taking the points with the Redskins. The Ravens offense does not scare me, they were productive last week against the worst defense in the NFL, but overall they have’t been blowing teams away in their three wins, beating the Browns by just five points, and the Jaguars by two points. Overall I am not to worried about the Redskins shaky defense against a stale Ravens offense. The Redskins offense has looked great the last two weeks and Cousins has gotten into a rhythm so I am confident they can put up points. The Ravens defense did not perform well against the Raiders, allowing 28 points and I like the Redskins offense better than the Raiders offense, and I think this will be a close game that can go either way so I will take the points with the Redskins.

Prediction: Washington +3.5
