New York Giants (0-3; 1-2 ATS; 1-2 O/U) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1-1; 1-1 ATS; 1-1 O/U)
NFL: Sunday, October 1, 2017 at 4:05pm EST
Line: Tampa Bay -4
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will do battle with the New York Giants in an NFC Battle Sunday afternoon from Raymond James Stadium. The Giants were edged 27-24 by the Eagles last week, and the Buccaneers are coming off a rough 34-17 road loss to the Vikings. These clubs last met in 2015 with the Giants recording a 32-18 win.
Giants Late Rally Not Enough in Third Straight Loss
The New York Giants rallied for 24 points in the fourth quarter but the Eagles converted on a 61-yard field goal as time expired to hand the Giants their third straight loss to start the season. Eli Manning took a while to get going and put up big numbers, connecting on 35 of 47 passes for 366 yards with three TD’s against two interceptions. The 36-year old quarterback had only tossed one TD coming into week three and has now collected 825 passing yards with a 4:4 TD to INT ratio on the season. Odell Beckham Jr. was much more involved this week, bringing in nine catches for 79 yards and two touchdowns. The star receiver was limited in week two with an ankle injury and has now notched 115 receiving yards in two games. Sterling Shepard had a huge game, registering 133 receiving yards and now leads the Giants with 200 receiving yards. The Giants face an uphill battle, sitting at 0-3 with a challenging schedule ahead.
The Giants defense was not as sharp as they would want last week, conceding 354 total yards which included 193 rushing yards. Olivier Vernon exited late in the game with an ankle injury and his status for this one is not yet known. The Giants defense was looking very promising heading into the season, however, so far they have not been as effective as expected.
Winston Throws Three INT’s in Loss to Vikings
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were outscored 21-3 in the first half in their 34-17 road loss to the Minnesota Vikings last week. Jameis Winston did record 328 passing yards with two touchdowns, however, he hurt his team by tossing three interceptions. The 23-year old quarterback has now tallied 532 passing yards with three touchdowns against three interceptions through two games. The Bucs abandoned their running game, rushing for only 26 yards on nine carries. Doug Martin did not suit up again and has one game left to serve on his suspension. DeSean Jackson collected his first touchdown as a member of the Bucs in the loss, making four catches for 84 yards after recording only 39 receiving yards in Bucs week two win. Mike Evans made his presence felt but could not make a big play, bringing in seven catches for 67 yards, and now leads Tampa Bay with 93 receiving yards after two games. The Bucs had trouble against the Vikings tough defense and face another strong Giants defense this week.
The Tampa Bay defense could not stop Case Keenum last week and allowed a total of 494 yards which included 369 passing yards. The Bucs defense is ravaged with injuries as Kwon Alexander did not suit up and is questionable for this contest. Linebacker Lavonte David sprained his ankle against the Vikings and will be out at least a few weeks, while cornerback Brent Grimes is questionable.
The New York Giants are:
- 4-0-1 ATS in their last 5 games in Tampa Bay.
- 5-1-1 ATS in their last 7 games against the Buccaneers.
- 8-2-1 ATS in their last 11 games in week four.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are:
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games in week four.
- 11-24 ATS in their last 35 home games against a team with a losing road record.
I am taking the points with the Giants in this contest. This is already a must-win game for the Giants and I believe they will come through with a big performance. The Buccaneers pass defense has not looked good, allowing 301 passing yards to Mike Glennon and the Bears in their first contest, followed 369 passing yards and three touchdowns by Case Keenum and the Vikings last week. I expect Eli Manning and Odell Beckham Jr. to both have a big game for the Giants. Furthermore, Winston has not looked good this season, he only threw one TD in his first game and tossed three interceptions against the Vikings last week, and he will be facing a strong Giants defense. The Bucs are also dealing with a slew of injuries on their defense, giving me more confidence in the Giants.
Pick: New York Giants +4
The Giants offense found their groove late last week and I expect them to put on a strong offensive display against the Buccaneers defense. Tampa Bay’s pass defense has struggled and their defensive injuries won’t help their cause. The Giants rush defense has not been effective and Winston was able to toss three TD’s last week, so the Buccaneers should also move the ball and score some points, plus the over is 16-5 in the Buccaneers last 21 October games.
