Los Angeles Rams (3-2; 2-3 ATS: 4-1 O/U) vs. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-2; 3-2 ATS: 3-2 O/U)
NFL Week Six: Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 4:05pm EST
Line: Jacksonville -2.5
The Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Los Angeles Rams in a week six battle Sunday afternoon from EverBank Field in Jacksonville. The Rams fell 16-10 to the Seahawks last week, and the Jaguars are coming off a convincing 30-9 road win over the Steelers. This is the first meeting between these teams since the 2013 season in a game the Rams won 34-20.
Rams Run Into Strong Seahawks Defense in Loss
The Los Angeles Rams offense was cooled down by the Seahawks stifling defense in their 16-10 home loss last weekend. Jared Goff had some trouble, completing only 22 of 47 passes for 288 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. Overall, the 22-year old quarterback is having a terrific sophomore season after a rough rookie campaign, recording 1360 passing yards with a 7:3 TD to INT ratio. Todd Gurley was quiet in the loss, amassing only 43 yards on 14 carries. The third-year running back is having a tremendous season, collecting 405 rushing yards to go with 241 receiving yards on the season. Robert Woods made a team-high five catches for 66 yards last weekend. The 25-year old wide receiver has caught for over 100 yards on one occasion this season and now leads the Rams with 252 receiving yards. Overall, the Rams offense has been a pleasant surprise this season, however, they ran into a tough defense last week and face another vaunted defense in this matchup against the Jaguars.
The Rams defense was strong in the loss to the Seahawks, allowing only 241 total yards. The Rams were also able to make two interceptions and three sacks. Although a loss, the Rams defense played their best game of the season. They are now tied for first with Seattle with a 3-2 record in the NFC West.
Jaguars Make Five INT’s in Stunning Win Over Steelers
The Jacksonville Jaguars made five interceptions in their surprising 30-9 road win against the Steelers last weekend. Blake Bortles was not very busy, completing 8 of 14 passes for 95 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception. The 25-year old quarterback has been inconsistent this season and has tallied 827 passing yards with a 7:4 TD to INT ratio. Leonard Fournette put on a show in the win, accumulating a season-high 181 rushing yards along with two touchdowns. The rookie running back is a budding star, already collecting 466 rushing yards in five games. Marqise Lee made two grabs for 49 yards in the win. The 25-year old wide receiver has yet to record a TD and leads the Rams with 208 receiving yards. The Jaguars offense has been outstanding this season, ranking fifth in the NFL with an average of 27.8 points per game.
The Jaguars defense was spectacular in the win over the Steelers returning two of their five interceptions to the house for a touchdown. Tashaun Gipson made two of the interceptions and has now made three picks on the season. The Jacksonville defense has been outstanding all season and feature a tremendous secondary that has shut down the passing game with great success. Jacksonville now sits in sole possession of first place in the AFC South.
The Los Angeles Rams are:
- 3-13-1 ATS in their last 17 games overall.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games.
- 1-8 ATS in their last 9 games after recording more than 350 total yards in their previous game.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against the Rams.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games against a team with a winning record.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games after allowing less than 90 rushing yards in their previous game.
I am taking the Jaguars in this matchup. The Jaguars defense is looking outstanding, holding the Steelers to nine points last week and made five interceptions. Their pass defense has been outstanding, allowing an average of only 177 passing yards per game so I expect them to contain Goff. Furthermore, Leonard Fournette is having a tremendous season on the ground, and the Jaguars now own the number one ranked running game in the NFL. The Rams are having some trouble stopping the run, conceding 133 rushing yards per game, so I expect another big game from Fournette. This will be a close game but I like the Jaguars by a field goal at home.
Pick: Jacksonville Jaguars
The Jaguars offense is looking good and the Rams offense ranks second in the NFL in points per game. As mentioned Fournette and the Jaguars running game should have a very productive afternoon, and the over is 4-0 in their last four home games. The Jaguars rush defense is also struggling, so Gurley should move the ball on the ground, plus the over is 6-1 in the Rams last seven games overall.
