Carolina Panthers (4-2 SU, 3-3-0 PS, 4-2-0 O/U) vs Chicago Bears (2-4 SU, 4-2-0 PS, 2-4-0 O/U)

When: 1:00 PM EDT, Sunday, October 22, 2017

Where: Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois

Lines: Carolina -3

Total: 40.5

The NFC South Division meets the NFC North Division on Sunday Afternoon as the Carolina Panthers grapple with the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. The Panthers come into this game off of a 28-23 home loss to the Eagles, while the Bears are off a 27-24 OT win over the Ravens on the road. These teams last met back in 2014, in Raleigh, and the Panthers won that game by a score of 31-24.

Panthers Struggle To Stop Wentz & Company

The Carolina Panthers have been a solid defensive team from much of the early part of the season, but they did struggle to stop Carson Wentz and that Philadelphia offense in their 28-23 home loss to the Eagles on Thursday night. The Panthers allowed Philadelphia to throw for just 209 yards in the game, but Wentz had three TD passes against them while the Panthers failed to pick off any passes and the Eagles converted on some big third downs as well. The Eagles also ran for 101 yards on them. The Panthers will hope to get their defense back on track against rookie Mitchell Trubisky in this one. The offense for the Panthers had been better on offense of late, but they had just 305 yards of total offense against the Eagles. Cam Newton did not have a good game against them as he hit 28 of 52 passes for 239 yards with one TD and three INTs. He did run for 71 yards and a TD, but still, the three picks were killer. On the year, he has now thrown for 1476 yards with nine TDs and eight INTs, while rushing for 161 yards and three TDs. His QBR of 85.3 is 22nd in the league. The offense will have a test against a Bears defense that has been tough this year, but that is offset some by the fact that their defense is tough and will be taking on a less than stellar offense in this one.

The Panthers have been below average on offense so far this year as they come in ranked 18th in the league in total offense (323.5 ypg), 17th in passing (228.0 ypg), 22nd in rushing (95.5 ypg) and 17th in scoring at 21.3 ppg. On defense, they have been very solid as they come in ranked 4th in total yards allowed (280.0 ypg), 7th against the pass (196.7 ypg) and 5th vs the run (83.3 ypg), while allowing 20.3 ppg, which is 9th in the league.

Mitchell Trubisky Gets 1st Career Win

With the 2nd overall pick in this year’s draft, the Chicago Bears took Mitchell Trubisky out of North Carolina and then he went on to have a very strong spring. He was not the starting QB on opening day, but after Mike Glennon struggled through the first four games of the year, he was named the starter for week five against the Vikings on Monday night. He didn’t have a great game and the Vikes won by a score 20-17. In game two, he hit just eight of 16 passes for 113 yards and a TD, but also didn’t throw any picks. He wasn’t asked to do much as the ground game churned out 231 yards against a tough Ravens defense. Still, he didn’t hurt his team and it was his first career win. Jordan Howard had a big game on the ground as he ran for 167 yards. He also ran for 140 yards earlier in the year in a win over the Steelers. The Bears have given up some points this year, but they haven’t allowed a ton of yards. The Bears allowed 24 points in the win over the Ravens, but on just 291 yards of total offense. The reason is that their special teams broke down and allowed the Ravens to have a punt return and a kick return for TDs in the game. The Bears did get a 90 yards INT return for a TD in the game. The Bears have a long way to go to get to the playoffs, but they have a good defense and a QB to build around, so they are on the right path.

Chicago enters this contest ranked 26th in the league in total offense (306.8 ypg), 29th in passing (170.8 ypg), 3rd in rushing (136.0 ypg) and 28th in scoring at 17.5 ppg. On defense, they have been very solid so far as they come in ranked 6th in total yards allowed (302.7 ypg), 8th against the pass (198.3 ypg) and 16th vs the run (104.3 ypg), while allowing 21.6 ppg, which is 25th in the league.

Trends

Carolina is:

  • 5-1 ATS in their last six games following an ATS loss
  • 4-1-1 ATS in their last six meetings in this series

Chicago is:

  • 14-38-1 ATS in their last 53 games after accumulating more than 150 yards rushing in their previous game
  • 1-6 ATS in their last seven games following a straight up win

The Carolina Panthers are off a bad home loss to the Eagles, while the Bears come in off a nice road win over the Ravens. The Bears were able to run wild on that defense, but you can bet that the Panthers will take the run away from them and try and make the young QB beat them. He had a very good spring, but hasn’t looked all that great in his first two starts so far and after struggling against the Eagles last week, I look for this Carolina defense to really step up here, while their offense continues to improve and score just enough points to walk away with a win of about seven points.

Pick: Carolina -3

The Chicago Bears have a very strong running game, while their passing game is still a work in progress with a rookie QB calling the shots. The Panthers have looked much better on offense the last three weeks, but still, it is not a team that relies on their offense to win games. The defense for the Panthers has been solid and they should be able to shut down the Chicago running game and make Trubisky beat them, which he is just not ready to do on his own. The Bears have allowed many points this year, but not many yards and they should be able to keep the Panthers; offense in check some. I look for a 21-14 Carolina win.

Pick: Under 40.5

Confidence: 4
