Sunday's matchup is a prove-it game for LA

Los Angeles was upended by Baltimore in the "Harbaugh Bowl" on Monday, as the Ravens outgained the Chargers 389-285 in total yards. Baltimore was a combined 11-for-18 on third and fourth down, while LA was 7-for-16. The Chargers went 54 minutes between touchdowns, helping the Ravens pull away with their run game (212 rushing yards on 37 carries).

“They ran the ball real well. We need better block destruction just across the board, but you’ve got to give them credit. They did a heck of a job,” LA head coach Jim Harbaugh said.

QB Justin Herbert paces the Chargers' passing game with 2,404 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and one interception. His top receiving targets are Ladd McConkey (49 receptions for 698 yards and four TDs) and Joshua Palmer (23 receptions for 403 yards and one TD). The Los Angeles run game features J.K. Dobbins (158 carries for 766 yards and eight TDs), who left Monday's game in the second quarter with a knee injury.

LA averages 22.1 points (18th) and 322.6 total yards (21st), including 204.5 passing yards (20th) and 118.1 rushing yards (13th). The defense surrenders 15.9 points (1st) and 323.6 total yards (12th) per game, including 203.9 passing yards (9th) and 119.7 rushing yards (15th).

Los Angeles Chargers Injury Report: RB J.K. Dobbins (knee) is out. TE Will Dissly (knee), S Alohi Gilman (hamstring), TE Hayden Hurst (hip), LB Denzel Perryman (groin), CB Cam Hart (concussion) and DJ Chark Jr. (hip) are questionable to play on Sunday versus Atlanta.

What will Falcons do off their bye week?

Atlanta is coming off a bye week following consecutive losses. The Falcons won five of their previous six games, gaining control of the NFC South division, but Tampa Bay is breathing down their necks. The loss to the Broncos was jarring, as ATL was outscored by 32 points and outgained by 174 total yards. The Falcons were just 4-for-13 on third down in the road loss.

QB Kirk Cousins leads the Atlanta aerial attack with 2,807 passing yards, 17 touchdowns and nine picks. His top receiving targets are Darnell Mooney (48 receptions for 711 yards and five TDs) and Drake London (61 receptions for 710 yards and six TDs). The Falcons' run game is led by Bijan Robinson (167 carries for 783 yards and six TDs), but Tyler Allgeier (85 carries for 429 yards and two scores) also plays a large role.

Atlanta averages 22.2 points (16th) and 361.5 total yards (8th), including 243.6 passing yards (5th) and 117.9 rushing yards (14th). The Falcons' defense allows 24.9 points (25th) and 357.1 total yards (25th) per game, including 229.9 passing yards (26th) and 127.2 rushing yards (19th).

Atlanta Falcons Injury Report: WR Drake London (hip), WR Darnell Mooney (hip), LB Troy Andersen (knee), OL Matthew Bergeron (neck), DT Ruke Orhorhoro (ankle), CB Mike Hughes (neck), CB Dee Alford (hamstring) and G Chris Lindstrom (knee) are questionable to play versus Los Angeles.

Full-Game Total Pick

Chargers vs. Falcons betting pick: The total will be under 48 points.

Betting Trend: The under is 13-7 in the Chargers' last 20 games.

With the total at 47.5 points, I don't see value in a wager on the over.

The Chargers are playing on a short week and the Falcons will stop trying to outgun teams, leaning on their ground game to keep the football away from Los Angeles. While Atlanta has pulled off some close wins this season, it hasn't moved the football with ease in its last two weeks, either. The total is high, as the Falcons are a high-tempo team and the Bolts are pass-heavy, but I don't predict a shootout on Sunday. The Chargers should still have success running the ball against a weak Dirty Birds run defense, and LA will be vulnerable defensively against Atlanta's two-headed RB monster in Robinson and Allgeier.

I expect this to be a tightly contested game between playoff hopefuls coming off losses. That should lead to a lower-scoring game than the 47.5-point total suggests it will be.

Prediction: Under 47.5
