The Green Bay Packers (13-4, 12-5 ATS, 8-9 O/U) head on the road to battle the San Francisco 49ers (10-7, 9-8 RL, 8-9 O/U) in week one preseason action on Friday night. The Packers went 13-4 last year and 0-3 in preseason action. The 49ers posted a 10-7 record and a 2-1 record in the preseason. These foes met in last year's playoff in a game SF won 13-10.

Packers Starting Love in Opener

The Green Bay Packers are an interesting team to watch in the preseason as they are monitoring their backup QB situation. You won’t see Aaron Rodgers who signed the big four-year deal in the offseason, especially considering preseason is only three games.

This year’s preseason is a great opportunity for Jordan Love, who was the Packers’ first-round pick out of Utah State in 2020. The 23-year-old completed 58% of his passes for 411 yards with a 2:3 TD to INT ratio in limited regular season action last year. Love accrued 271 passing yards and a 1:1 TD to INT ratio in two preseason games in 2021. The Packers also have Danny Etling as their third-string QB. Etling has zero NFL regular game experience.

Green Bay’s receiving core is definitely a bit of a question mark after Devante Adams departed. They are relying on Sammy Watkins and Allen Lazard. They will see little if any, action in this one. Aaron Jones is the Packers' #1 RB and A.J. Dillon is the expected #2. Dillon had a stellar 2021 season, collecting 803 rushing yards on an average of 4.3 yards per carry. 3rd string RB Kylin Hill is on the PUP list and won't play. The Packers used their top draft picks on defense including linebacker Quay Walker. The team has solid cornerbacks led by Jaire Alexander.

The Packers averaged 26.5 points last year, ranking them 10th overall. They allowed an average of 21.8 points, placing them 14th in the league.

Lance Ready for Spotlight in SF

The San Francisco 49ers have a different look heading into the season. This is because veteran QB Jimmy Garoppolo is not with the team and is likely to be traded or released. Trey Lance is now in the spotlight as the clear #1 QB in San Francisco. The 49ers brass believes the 2021 third overall pick is ready to become an elite QB in this league. Lance flashed some of his potential in his six games of action last year, accumulating over 600 yards accompanied by a 5:2 TD to INT ratio.

Lance will have limited playing time in this game. Veteran QBs Nate Sudfield and Brock Purdy will also share the duties in the three preseason bouts. Sudfield has spent all three of his NFL seasons with the Eagles where he accrued 188 passing yards in regular season play. He went 4 for 7 with 47 passing yards in his limited action in exhibition play last year. The 49ers have an interesting 3rd string QB in former Iowa State QB Brock Purdy. The 22-year-old had productive seasons in college. He logged over 3000 passing yards last season. Despite his numbers, he was a seventh-round pick.

The 49ers' #1 RB Elijah Mitchell won’t play very much. At most, you’ll see a few carries. Look for plenty of Jeff Wilson Jr., Tyron Davis-Price, and Trey Sermon on the ground. Davis-Price was drafted in the 3rd round and will likely get a chance to show what he can do throughout the preseason. The 49ers have solid depth at WR beyond Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk. They added Ray-Ray McCloud III and also have Willie Snead IV.

The 49ers stifling defense has a ton of talent led by Nick Bosa who won’t play. They had trouble against the pass last year due to a subpar pass rush. Management added DE Drake Jackson in the draft and he could play in this one.

The 49ers scored an average of 25.7 points last year, landing them 15th overall. The defense limited opponents to 19.5 points, good for 10th in the NFL.

The Packers will have Jordan Love starting this game according to HC Matt LaFleur. Love was a first-round pick in 2020 and has accrued experience. The Packers want to know what they have in the young QB. Love saw extended action in two regular-season games against the Chiefs and Lions last year, recording 324 passing yards in those two performances. He also connected on 69% of his passes in two games in last year’s preseason.

Furthermore, while Trey Lance is playing, he will probably only be in for a few series. I am not keen on the 49ers' backup QBs Nate Sudfield and Brock Purdy. Sudfield did not see any action in the regular season last year and only attempted five passes in the preseason. Brock Purdy is a rookie just drafted in the seventh round.

Prediction: Green Bay Packers +2.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

I expect this total to go over. This is a meager total of 32.5 points. I expect a strong output from Jordan Love who will see extended playing time. Packers’ 3rd string QB Danny Etling is somewhat familiar with the NFL as he has been employed by the Patriots, Falcons, Seahawks, and Broncos, primarily with their practice squads.

Also, the 49ers will contribute offensively. They generated several points in last year’s preseason. They scored a total of 65 points in three games.  Green Bay conceded an average of 23 points in their three preseason bouts last year.

Prediction: Under 33.5
