Minnesota Vikings 1-0 (1-0 ATS) at Seattle Seahawks 1-0 (1-0 ATS)
When and Where: Friday, August 18, Century Link Field, Seattle, Wash. 10:00pm EDT (NFLN)
Spread: Seattle -3.5; Total 40.5
Both of these squads have began their preseason with victories. The Seahawks ran it up on the newly deemed, “Los Angeles” Chargers, 48-17. The Vikings, meanwhile, took down the Buffalo Bills, 17-10. Minnesota finished with an 8-8 record a season ago, which was not good enough to make the postseason, while Seattle went 10-5-1 before heading to the postseason and taking down the Lions and then ultimately falling to the eventual NFC Champion Atlanta Falcons by 16 points in the next round.
Vikings Hoping to Get Back on Track
Minnesota fought their way through the “Black and Blue Division” just like they always do, and finished with a respectable .500 record. Unfortunately for the Purple People Eaters, it was simply not enough. The Vikings could contend this season, but the quarterback situation is still wide open with Sam Bradford returning as the starter, Teddy Bridgewater returning from injury and even Case Keenum coming in as a backup.
Keenum completed 11 of his 16 pass attempts for 121 yards. With the victory, Minnesota improved to 13-1 in the preseason under Mike Zimmer. Bradford was 5-of-7 for 35 yards but got sacked twice. Dalvin Cook had 13 yards on just five carries.
Seahawks Wanting to Sail Again
Seattle was a Super Bowl Champion just three years ago. Just two years ago they probably should have been back-to-back champs if not for a poor coaching decision at the goal line in the closing seconds. The squad has yet to achieve the same standards in the previous two seasons, but still have quarterback Russell Wilson at the helm, as well as the man who helped along the way from the sidelines, Peter Carroll.
In their preseason opener, they took down the newly relocated Chargers, 48-17 on the road. Mike Davis ran the ball for 33 yards on eight carries. Kasen Williams had four receptions for 119 yards with a long of 34. The defense allowed 322 yards, but just 72 on the grounds.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 road games
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 home games
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games on fieldturf
Seattle put up some offensive fireworks a weekend ago and that was on the road. They are facing a Vikings squad that did not exactly light the world on fire. Unless the Minnesota second and third teams can learn to shut down this Seahawks offense, then we should probably expect some more of the same.
Pick: Seahawks -3.5
As always with the preseason, I do not expect a lot of points. However, Seattle managed to put up 48 a week ago. Then again, most of those points came against the Chargers backups while they are still adjusting to playing in a soccer stadium in Carson, Calif. Either way, I would not expect a lot of points here.
