Kansas City Chiefs (0-1; 0-1 ATS; 1-0 O/U) vs. Cincinnati Bengals (1-0; 1-0 ATS; 0-1 O/U)
NFL Preseason: Saturday, August 19, 2017 at 7:00pm EST
Line: Cincinnati -1.5
The Cincinnati Bengals will clash with the Kansas City Chiefs in a preseason battle Saturday night from Paul Brown Stadium. The Chiefs were defeated 27-17 by the 49ers last week, and the Bengals came away with a 23-12 win in their preseason opener. The Bengals defeated the Chiefs 36-21 in the previous meeting in the 2015 season.
First Round Pick Mahomes Accurate in NFL Debut
The Kansas City Chiefs conceded 18 points in the fourth quarter in their 27-17 preseason loss last week. Alex Smith saw brief action, completing four of his six passes for 48 yards. The veteran quarterback had a steady 2016 season, accumulating over 3500 passing yards with a 15:8 TD to INT ratio. The Chiefs got their first look at their 2017 first round pick Patrick Mahomes who had a solid debut. The Texas Tech standout was very accurate, connecting on 7 of his 9 passes for 49 yards with one touchdown. Mahomes tossed 41 TD’s with Texas Tech last season and is the Chiefs quarterback of the future. Tyreek Hill also looked good in his limited action, bringing in two receptions for 46 yards on his two targets. The second year wide receiver had a strong rookie campaign, recording 593 receiving yards and notched six touchdowns. Hill has looked outstanding throughout training camp and is poised for a big season. The Chiefs defense tallied three sacks and did not record an interception in last week’s loss.
The Chiefs scored an average of 24.3 points per game in 2016, ranking them 13th overall. The Kansas City defense was terrific last year, conceding an average of 19.4 points per game, good for seventh in the NFL.
Dalton Throws Interception in Bengals Preseason Victory
The Cincinnati Bengals scored two touchdowns in the third quarter in their 23-12 preseason victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last week. The Bengals did give their offensive starters action early on in this one. Andy Dalton did see limited action in the first quarter and completed four of his five passes for 38 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Third string quarterback Jeff Driskel was terrific, converting on eight of his nine passes for 98 yards and one touchdown, and also added 36 rushing yards. Joe Mixon got his first taste of the NFL and was solid, recording 31 rushing yards off six carries. The 2017 second round pick had a great collegiate career with Oklahoma, and he will see several touches per game once the regular season comes around. Cincinnati also features established backs Giovani Bernard and Jeremy Hill, however, Mixon does have the ability take over as the number one running back. A.J. Green made two catches for 21 yards and Brandon LaFell made one catch for 13 yards. The Bengals pass defense played well as they did not concede a touchdown in the air.
The Bengals averaged 20.3 points per game last season, ranking them 24th overall. The Cincinnati defense was solid last year, allowing an average of 19.7 points per game, good for eighth in the NFL.
The Kansas City Chiefs are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games.
The Cincinnati Bengals are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
I am siding with Bengals in this contest. The Bengals running game was outstanding last week, rushing for a total of 140 yards with Joe Mixon standing out, and overall the Bengals are very deep at running back. Also, the Bengals three quarterbacks combined for 17 completions on 22 pass attempts, and they are going against a Chiefs defense that struggled against the weak 49ers offense that did not play several their offensive starters last week. The Chiefs running game also did not look good last week, giving me more confidence in the Bengals.
Pick: Cincinnati Bengals
The Bengals offense was outstanding last week and they are going against a Chiefs defense that struggled last week. I expect the Bengals offensive depth to shine through in this one after they scored a solid 23 points last week. The Chiefs offense should have a better showing this weak as they give their starters more playing time, so I am confident the over is a strong play in this matchup.
