NFL: Saturday, August 26, 2017 at 9:00pm EST
Line: Denver -3
The Denver Broncos will host the Green Bay Packers in week three exhibition action Saturday night from Sports Authority Field. The Packers recorded a 21-17 road win over the Redskins last week, and the Broncos rolled past the 49ers by a 33-14 score last Saturday night.
Rodgers Sharp in Packers Second Preseason Win
The Green Bay Packers played a complete game on both sides of the ball in their 21-17 road win over the Redskins last week. Aaron Rodgers was sharp in his limited action, connecting on 6 of 8 passes for 37 yards and one touchdown. It was a solid night all around for the Packers QB’s as Brett Hundley was tremendous, completing 9 of his 10 passes for 107 yards. The 24-year old backup quarterback has now tallied 197 passing yards with two TD’s and one interception through two preseason games. Martellus Bennett made one catch for three yards in his brief playing time last week. The 30-year old tight end joined the Packers after signing a three year, 20.25 million dollar deal in the offseason after making 55 receptions for 701 yards with the Patriots last season. Jordy Nelson saw his first preseason action and made two grabs for 19 yards. The 32-year old wide receiver had another strong 2016 season, racking up 1257 receiving yards with 14 touchdowns. Rookie cornerback Kevin King made two tackles last week. King was the Packers first selection in this year’s draft and is expected to help remedy a shaky pass defense.
Last season, the Packers had a big season offensively, averaging 27 points per game, ranking them fourth in the NFL. The Green Bay defense allowed an average of 24.3 points per game, placing them 21st overall.
Siemian vs. Lynch Battle Continues to Unfold
The Denver Broncos received great production from their quarterbacks in their easy 33-14 road win over the 49ers last week. The competition between Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch for the number one QB position continues to unfold with both coming through with strong performances. Siemian connected on 8 of 11 passes for 93 yards and one touchdown, and Lynch completed 9 of his 13 passes for 39 yards. Both young quarterbacks were strong in their week one win as well, however, Siemian appears to be the frontrunner. Siemian was the Broncos starter last season and recorded 3401 passing yards with an 18:10 TD to INT ratio. C.J. Anderson saw a good amount of playing time last week and rushed for 34 yards off seven carries. The 26-year old running back dealt with a torn meniscus last season and tallied 437 rushing yards in just four games played. Jamaal Charles sat out again last week however he is likely to suit up this week. The veteran running back only collected 40 rushing yards off 12 carries in three games last season. The Broncos rush defense was outstanding last week, limiting the 49ers to only 37 rushing yards .
The Broncos averaged 20.8 points per game last season, ranking them 22nd in the NFL. The Denver defense was outstanding, conceding an average of 18.6 points per game, good for fourth overall.
The Green Bay Packers are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 Saturday games.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games on grass.
The Denver Broncos are:
- No Key Trends
I am taking the Packers in this contest. This could be a very close game and I feel more conformable siding with the Packers. Aaron Rodgers looked sharp last week and he stated he will likely play more this week, and Brett Hundley has also looked very comfortable, accumulating 197 passing yards on 17 completions with two TD’s through two games. The Broncos had two very easy opponents in their first two games, and they are now going against a Packers team with a lot more depth then they’ve seen so far.
Pick: Green Bay Packers
The Packers were very efficient offensively in their first two contests, and the Broncos have scored a combined 57 points in their two preseason games. Green Bay does feature enough offensive skill to break through the Denver defense, and the over is 7-0 in the Packers last seven games overall. The Broncos will score points led by Siemian and Lynch, and the over is 4-0 in the Packers last four road games.
