NFL football action on Sunday afternoon and a pair of teams from the NFC East will hookup as the punchless New York Giants battle it out with the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, PA. The Giants are off another horrible offensive performance in their 24-10 loss to the Lions at home on Monday Night, while the Eagles are off a 27-20 loss at Kansas City. The teams split the two meetings last year.
The Giant Offense Is A Mess
On opening week, the Giants struggled to score or even move the ball against the Cowboys as they lost the game 19-3 and totaled just 233 yards of total offense. They then followed that up with a 24-10 loss to the Lions on Monday night and had just 270 yards of total offense in the game. They were missing star wideout Odell Beckham in the opener but had him back against the Lions and while he did have four catches for 36 yards, he also dropped a key pass late in the game. Brandon Marshall also had a key drop in the game and it was a pass that he should have easily caught. Eli Manning threw for 239 yards but was also sacked five times and the Giants as a team committed seven penalties in the game, including a key holding call when they had first and goal at the one. They had to settle for an FG.
Too many mistakes and it also doesn’t help that they have no running game as they have now run for just 97 yards in two games. Manning also threw a pick that eventually led to a Detroit TD and the Giants allowed a punt return for a TD in the game as well. It was mistake after mistake and now they are 0-2 on the year. The good news is that every other team in the NFC East is just 1-1 so far. The other good news is that their defense has played well in the first two games as they have allowed just 324.5 ypg overall, including 191 ypg through the air, but the run defense could use some help as they have allowed 133 ypg on the ground and the Lions did run for 138 yards on them. The Giants really need to get their offense going or this will be a long year for them.
Eagles Nearly Pull Comeback Against The Chiefs
The Philadelphia Eagles had a surprising win in Washington to start the year, but they could not keep the momentum going in their second game as they fell to Kansas City on the road by a score of 27-20. The Game was tight throughout until the Chiefs grabbed two late TDs to go ahead 27-13 with just over two minutes left in the game. The Eagles then scored with eight seconds left in the game and got the onside kick, but their hail mary pass didn’t connect and the Chiefs escaped with the win. It was a very inspired effort from the Eagles, who look like they have the tools to make a run at the NFC East division title. The offense has been solid so far this year and it starts with Carson Wentz, who is off to a nice start as he has hit 60% of his passes for 640 yards with four TDs and two INTs. He also ran for 61 yards, which leads the team.
The Eagles could use more help from their running game as it will take the pressure off of Wentz and that offensive line which allowed six sacks to the Chiefs. The Eagles are 20th in the league in rushing at 82.5 ypg so far. The defense has been decent as they are 24th in the league in total yards allowed at 304 ypg and they have allowed just 88 ypg on the ground, which is bad news for a Giants team that cannot run the ball. The Eagles also have one of the best pass rushes in the league and they will be facing the worst offensive line in this game. The Eagles had four sacks against the elusive Alex Smith and two sacks in their win over the Redskins. The Eagles look like a very solid team this year.
New York is:
- The Dog is 1-5 ATS the last six games in this series
- 1-5 ATS their last six games in this series
- 5-1 ATS in their last six games in September
- 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games in Week three
The Giants really looked bad on Monday night as their offense continues to struggle. They have their weapons back with Beckham in the lineup and they also had their offensive line back intact, but still, it didn’t help them as they put up just 10 points and 270 yards against the Lions. They take on a fierce pass rush of the Eagles and with the worst offensive line in the league, that could be trouble for a Giants offense that just can’t get going this year so far. The Eagles have looked good on offense, especially Carson Wentz and they should be able to move the ball on the Giants in this one. If you can’t score, you can’t win and the Giants can’t score right now, so take the Eagles to win by at least a TD.
Pick: Philadelphia -3.5
The Eagles have a very good offense that will put up plenty of points this year, but the Giants have been decent on defense this year and I see them being able to slow down the Eagles just enough in this game. The Philadelphia defense is not great, but they have a great pass rush that should be able to overpower a bad Giants’ offensive line that has no running game to help them out. The Under is 6-1 the last seven meetings between these teams here in Philly and with the Giants not being able to score right now, I just don’t see how this game goes over the total.
