The San Fransico 49ers will play their home opener against the Green Packers on Sunday Night Football. The 49ers are coming into this game 2-0, after beating the Lions 41-33 as a 9.5-point favorite in the season opener and Philadelphia Eagles 17-11 as a three-point favorite last week.

The Packers disappointingly started the season by getting blown out by the Saints 38-3 as a four-point road favorite in Week 1 but bounced back with a 35-17 win as a home favorite against Detroit on Monday night.

Sunday's game will be the fifth time that these two teams have met since 2018. Last year the Packers went on the road and beat the 49ers 34-17 as a six-point favorite on Week 9.

Packers face familiar adversary

The Green Packers offseason drew plenty of negative attention during the offseason regarding whether superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers would return to the team or force a trade. The Packers have enjoyed winning seasons in nine of the last 11 years, but with Rodgers widely regarded as not only one of the best QBs in the game today but also as one of the best of all time, the franchise failing to reach the Super Bowl since the 2010 season has felt like underachieving to many followers.

According to BetMGM, the Packers entered the season with an over/under win total set at 10 wins. Although most teams would be happy to win 10-games, Rodgers and the Packers want more. in 2020, the Packers finished the regular season with an NFL-best 13-3 record but lost at home in the NFC Championship game 31-26 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The Packers were terrible in their season-opening loss to the Saints, getting outgained 322 to 229 in total yardage, and 22 to 14 in first downs. The Packers also turned the ball over three times, while the Saints did not commit any. Aaron Rodgers had a very un-Aaron Rodgers-like game against New Orleans, completing 15 of 28 passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns, before back-up Jordan Love would come in and go 5 for 7 for 68 yards.

On Monday night Football, the Packers had better success against the Lions, who entered the season with an over/under win total of 4.5 the worst in the NFC. The Lions led the game 17-14 at the half, but the Packers dominated after the break. Aaron Rodgers went 22 of 27 with 255 passing yards and four touchdowns, with Aaron Jones leading the ground attack with 67 yards on 17 attempts and a touchdown. The Packers forced two turnovers but did not commit any against the Lions.

49ers face biggest test yet on quest to reach 3-0

After ending the 2019 season with a Super Bowl loss, the San Francisco 49ers went 6-10 overall in 2020, an injury-plagued season for them. This year the franchise looks to return to title contention as it entered this year with anover/win total for this season is set at 10.5 by BetMG<. The strength of San Franciso last year was the defense. The 49ers were fifth in total defense, holding opponents to 314.4 total yards per game. The passing defense was fourth, holding opponents to 207.9 yards per game, and the run defense was seventh, allowing 106.4 yards per game. In two games this season, the 49ers allow 379 yards per game, 245.5 passing, and 120.5 rushing.

The 49ers outgained the Lions 442 to 430 in total yardage in the season opener, but it is worth noting that the Lions held a 219 to 13 total yardage advantage in the last 9:50 of the game, after the 49ers had built a 41-17 lead. Last week the 49ers were outgained by the Eagles 328 to 306 in total yardage, but once again, San Franciso controlled most of the game until late, holding a 17-3 lead with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter.

The quarterback position was the top story for the 49ers through the preseason and heading into Week 1. The 49ers selected Trey Lance, with the third pick overall in the 2021 NFL Draft from North Dakota State, who is eventually expected to take over as the team's franchise quarterback. Still, for now, the starting job belongs to Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo has completed 70.9% of his passes for 262.5 yards per game with two touchdowns so far. This year, Trey Lance has thrown one pass a five-yard touchdown in the season-opening win over the Lions.

Insiders Status:

The 49ers have won their first two games on the road, holding a lead of at least 14 points in the fourth quarter in both of those games. On the other side, the Packers put together three halves of uninspiring football before outscoring the Lions 21-0 in the second half on Monday Night. Although San Fransico has been the more impressive team so far, if there is one thing I have learned about the NFL, the eye test will often fool you early in the season, and you can not overreact from week to week.

Right now, I think the pressure is on the Packers to avoid getting off to a 1-2 start, and I like Aaron Rodgers when the pressure is on. Although the San Francisco 49ers will have the luxury of playing at home, the trends for them are not favorable recently under Kyle Shanahan.

The Packers don't usually have many subpar performances in a row, and the 49ers have only covered the speared in five of their last 22 home games against a team with a losing road record, I will take the Packers and the points here.

Prediction: Green Bay Packers +3

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Including the playoffs, this will be the fifth time these two teams have met within the last five seasons. In each of the previous four meetings, at least one team has scored 33 points or more, with three of the four games going over the total. I expect this game to be close and turn into a bit of a shootout late in the second half. The trends also strongly favor the over, with the 49ers playing to the over in five of their last six Week 3 games. With every Week 3 Packers game going over the total in each of the past six seasons, I will take the over on Sunday night.

Prediction: Over 50
