The New York Islanders will host the Detroit Red Wings in an Eastern Conference tilt Tuesday night from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. The Red Wings were crushed 5-1 by the Sabres on Sunday, and the Islanders were topped 6-2 by the Rangers on Monday night. The Islanders posted a 4-1 road win in the lone meeting this season.

Red Wings Starting to Turn the Corner

The last-place Detroit Red Wings have not been quite as terrible recently. They are 3-3 in their last six games overall which included wins against the Canadiens and Sens. Detroit was thrashed 5-1 by the Sabres in Detroit on Sunday night.

Tyler Bertuzzi has earned three points in his last three games overall. The 24-year old left-winger is having a solid season, netting a team-leading 16 goals along with 18 assists. Bertuzzi picked up an assist in the loss to the Islanders in November. Dylan Larkin is playing well, collecting at least one point in five consecutive games. The 23-year old center is having a bit of a disappointing season from a production standpoint, recording 29 points in 45 games on the season. Detroit is an awful 4-16-1-1 on the road this season.

The Red Wings had Jimmy Howard in net in Sunday’s 5-1 loss. Howard is having a terrible season, posting a 4.10 GAA and an .880 save percentage accompanied with a 2-15-1 record. Bernier is questionable for this one. He has been decent, filing a 2.99 GAA and a 10-12-2 record. Detroit is averaging an NHL-worst 2.2 goals per game. They are also last with an average of 3.8 goals against per game.

Islanders Open Homestand Looking to Avoid Third Straight Loss

The New York Islanders will open a three-game homestand in this one. They have lost two straight games which included a rough 6-2 road loss to the Rangers on Monday night. New York is 4-5-1 in their last ten games overall.

Mathew Barzal was held off the scoresheet in Monday’s defeat. Overall, the Islanders' top offensive threat is playing well, recording three points in his last three games, and he is up to 17 goals and 20 assists on the season. Barzal recorded an assist in the win against Detroit earlier this season.

Brock Nelson ended his slump with a two-point effort in Monday’s defeat. The 28-year old center has three points this month, and 16 goals along with 17 assists on the season. The Islanders are tough to beat on home ice where they stand at 14-5-2-1 on the season.

New York will have Thomas Greiss between the pipes in this one after Varlamov got the start on Monday night. Greiss is having a solid season, recording a 12-7 record accompanied with a 2.59 GAA and a stellar .919 save percentage. The Islanders are scoring an average of 2.8 goals on the season, ranking them 21st in the NHL. They are holding opponents to 2.6 goals, good for third overall.

Rating:

I am taking the Islanders on the puck line (-1.5) in this game for added value. The Red Wings are especially terrible on the road where they have only won four of their 22 games on the season. They have been tagged with five straight road losses and they squandered at least four goals in four of those five games.

Furthermore, the Islanders are 14-5-3 on home ice and a low scoring Detroit team is going to have trouble finding the back of the net. The Islanders have only allowed eight goals in their last four home games. Each of the Red Wings’ last three losses occurred by at least two goals and I expect the same to occur in this one.

Prediction: New York Islanders -1.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I recommend a play on the under. The Red Wings are the lowest-scoring team in the NHL up against one of the best defensive teams. Detroit has netted two or fewer goals in seven out of their last ten games overall, and the under has cashed in five out of the Red Wings' last seven games overall.

In addition, the Islanders don’t usually score many goals as they rely on their defense to win games. They have collected three or fewer goals in five out of their last six games. The under is 3-0-1 in the Islanders' last four home games and it should hit again.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The under on the Red Wings team total offered on PointsBet is a strong play. The Red Wings have key injuries to their forwards which hasn’t helped matters. Anthony Mantha and Andreas Athanasiou are out. Detroit has only managed to score a combined four goals in their last three road games. The Islanders recently shutout the Avs and I expect them to silence the Red Wings.

Prediction: Red Wings Team Total Under

Half-Time Prop Prediction

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The under on the first period total is a solid play. The Red Wings are the lowest-scoring team in the first period as well where they only have 30 goals in 46 games. Defensively Detroit is solid in the opening frame where they have allowed only 39 goals. Also, the Islanders' best defensive period is in the first where they have only given up 35 goals on the season.

Prediction: First Period Total Under
