Monday evening National League Hockey action and a pair of Atlantic Division foes will square off as the Montreal Canadiens grapple with the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa, Ontario. The Canadiens come in off a 5-4 home win over the Rangers, while the Panthers are off a 5-4 shootout loss to the Devils on the road. Goalie Probables: The Canadiens will send out Carey Price and he will be opposed by Craig Anderson.

Danault Lifts Habs Over Rangers

It has been a very rough start for the Montreal Canadiens, but they may be coming out of it as they have won two of their last three games after beating the Rangers by a 5-4 score at home on Saturday night. The Habs had lost their previous seven games, so they are now looking to put together a nice run that will get them back in the playoff race. Their offense has been an issue so far, but they did score five in each of their last two wins. The Habs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the 1st period, but the Rangers fought back and eventually tied the game at 4-4. Phillip Danault then scored the game-winner with 10:23 left in the game. It was his 2nd of the game and 3rd of the year. Also scoring in the game was Paul Byron, which was his 3rd of the year, Alex Galchenyuk, which was his 3rd of the year and Max Pacioretty, which was his 3rd of the year. Snatching up the win against the Rangers was Carey Price, who stopped 22 of the 26 shots that he faced in the game. He is 3-7 with a 3.64 GAA on the year overall, including 1-4 with a 4.12 GAA on the road. In his career, Price has gone 121-112 with a 2.61 GAA on the road and 36-36 with a 2.50 GAA during the month of October, while against the Atlantic Division he has gone 82-65 with a 2.45 GAA and he is 11-7 with a 1.81 GAA against the Panthers.

The Canadiens have been really poor on offense so far as they come in ranked 31st in the league in scoring at 2.00 gpg, while also ranking 1st in shots taken (38.8 spg) and 29th in power play conversions, converting on 12.8% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they have been very poor as they come in ranked 30th in goals allowed, giving up 3.82 gpg, while also ranking 10th in shots allowed (31.2%) and 23rd in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 21.6% of their chances.

Sens Fall To Devils In A Shootout

The Ottawa Senators are another team that is struggling out the gate as they have won just five of their first 11 games so far. They were 3-2 on the year, but have since lost three of five after falling to the New Jersey Devils in a shootout by a score of 5-4 on the road. Despite the losing record, they are still in second place in the Atlantic Division, thanks to the fact that they have already played five games that have gone to a shootout. They have played a lot of extra hockey so far, but they have gone 1-5 in their sex games that have not been settled in regulation. Many tough losses there, but at least they have been getting points for those games. Scoring in the loss to the Devils was Mike Hoffman, which was his 4th of the year, David Johnny Oduya, which was his 1st of the year, Mark Stone, which was his 7th of the year and Christopher DiDomenico, which was the 1st of his career. Taking the loss against the Devils was Mike Condon and he has now gone 1-2 with a 2.23 GAA on the year. Craig Anderson will be back in the crease for this one and he has gone 4-4 with a 2.67 GAA on the year, including 2-4 with a 3.25 GAA here at home. In his career, he has gone 122-113 with a 2.63 GAA in his home games and 39-32 with a 2.82 GAA during the month of October, while against the Atlantic Division he has gone 68-51 with a 2.51 GAA and he has gone 10-13 with a 3.10 GAA against the Habs in his career.

Ottawa has been very good at the offensive end of the ice so far as they come in ranked 6th in the league in scoring at 3.64 gpg, while also ranking 13th in shots taken (32.4 spg) and 14th in power play conversions, converting on 17.4% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they have been decent so far as they rank 8th in goals allowed, giving up just 2.64 gpg, while also ranking 15th in shots allowed (32.4 spg) and 3rd in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on just 10.0% of their chances.

Montreal is:

  • 10-4 in their last 14 vs. Atlantic

Ottawa is:

  • 22-46 in their last 68 when their opponent scores five goals or more in their previous game
  • 2-5 in their last seven vs. Eastern Conference

The Canadiens come in having won two of their last three games, while the Sens are struggling. Montreal still has the worst offense in the league, while the Sens have been strong at that end of the Ice so far. Carey Price has struggled this year, but he has strong career numbers against the Sens, going 11-7 with a 1.81 GAA against them, while Anderson is 10-13 with a 3.10 GAA in his career against the Habs. I look for Montreal to play well in this game as they fight to escape the basement of the Atlantic Division and behind the play of {Price and their improving offense, they should grab a big win here.

Pick: Montreal +104
