NHL Hockey action on Sunday evening and the Pacific Division will meet the Metro Division as the Edmonton Oilers pay a visit to the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C. to rumble with the Washington Capitals. The Oilers enter this game off a 4-2 road loss to the Islanders, while the Capitals come in off a 4-1 win at home over the Penguins. Goalie Probables: The Oilers will be sending out Cam Talbot and the Capitals will counter with Braden Holtby.

Oilers Fall To Rangers On The Road

The Edmonton Oilers continue to struggle at the outset of this year as they are now 6-10 so far after many felt that they were the team to beat in the Pacific Division. Their offense has been a huge problem for them early in the year and it didn’t do a whole lot in their 4-2 loss to the Rangers on Saturday afternoon. New York is not a good defensive team, but the Oilers just could not take advantage of that and they have now scored seven total goals in their last four games. Scoring in the loss to the Rangers was Jesse Puljujarvi, which was his first of the year and 2nd of his career and Connor McDavid, which was his 7th of the year. The Oilers have now gone 3-4 on the road for the year so far. Taking the loss against the Rangers was Cam Talbot, who allowed three goals on 33 shot attempts to fall to 6-9 with a 2.91 GAA and a .912 save percentage on the year. Laurent Brossoit will be getting the nod in this one and he is 0-1 with a 3.65 GAA and a .854 save percentage in three games (one start) on the year. In his career, he has gone 2-3 with a 3.18 GAA on the road and 0-2 with a 5.60 GAA against the Metro Division. This will be his first meeting with the Capitals.

The Oilers have been a poor offensive team so far as they come in ranked 31st in the league in scoring at 2.33 gpg, while also ranking 3rd in shots taken (36.6 spg) and 28th in power play conversions, converting on 13.3% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they come in ranked 18th in the league in goals allowed, giving up 3.07 gpg, while also ranking 16th in shots allowed (32.0 spg) and 31st in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 28.0% of their chances.

Caps Top Pens In A Metro Division Showdown

The Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins are routinely two of the best teams in the Metro Division and the teams hooked up on Friday night here in Washington. The Caps won that game by a score of 4-1 as they got a measure of revenge for a 3-2 home loss to Pittsburgh earlier in the year. They were also looking for revenge from getting knocked out of the postseason the last two years by the Penguins. It was a huge win for a Washington team that has not looked great to start the year and now they look to keep it going against an Oilers team that is not off to a good start. Scoring in the win was John Carlson, which was his 2nd of the year, T.J. Oshie, which was his 7th of the year, Chandler Stephenson which was his 2nd of the year and Jakub Vrana, which was his 4th of the year. Snatching up the win against the Penguins was Braden Holtby, who stopped 27 of the 28 shots that he faced in the game to improve to 9-3 with a 2.48 GAA and a .924 save percentage on the year, including 4-2 with a 1.83 GAA and a .944 save percentage here at home. In his career, he has gone 106-50 with a 2.13 GAA in his home games and 35-18 with a 2.34 GAA during the month of November, plus he is 21-15 with a 2.74 GAA against the Pacific Division and he is 6-3 with a 1.88 GAA against the Oilers.

The Capitals come into this game ranked 16th in the league in scoring at 2.94 gpg, while also ranking 30th in shots taken (29.1 spg) and 14th in power play conversions, converting on 19.6% of their chances. At the defensive end of the ice, they have been a bit below average so far as they come in ranked 18th in goals allowed, giving up 3.06 gpg, while also ranking 21st in shots allowed (33.1 spg) and 24th in penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 21.4% of their chances.
