The Columbus Blue Jackets face the Nashville Predators with both teams looking to improve from rough starts to the season. The Blue Jackets have a 7-12-1 record and are in last place in the Metropolitan Division. The Predators have a 9-9-2 and are in the middle of the Central Division standings. Both teams are looking to improve in their divisions as the season progresses and the upcoming game should be a great one as a result.

Blue Jackets defense has been awful this year

The Blue Jackets are having a rough season with their offense struggling and scoring only 2.95 goals per game. Johnny Gaudreau and Boone Jenner have scored 15 goals and 17 assists to lead the top line but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have scored four goals or more while only three skaters have added six assists or more and opposing defenses can eliminate the top-heavy offense as a result.

The offense has struggled but the defense has let the Blue Jackets down this year, allowing 4.26 goals per game. Vladislav Gavrikov and Erik Gudbranson have combined for 1.1 defensive point shares but the rest of the unit has been awful, allowing opponents to find open shots on the net at will. In addition, goaltender Daniil Tarasov has struggled in the net with a .906 save percentage and a 3.46 goals-against average on 181 shots.

Predators offense has been awful

The Predators are having a rough season with their offense struggling and scoring only 2.55 goals per game with only six goals in the last three games. Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene, and Mikael Granlund have scored 14 goals and 35 assists while defenseman Roman Josi is adding four goals and 12 assists from the point but the rest of the offense has struggled. Only four skaters have scored five goals or more while only six skaters have added six assists to the offense, allowing opposing defenses to easily eliminate the offense.

The offense has let the Predators down but the defense has also struggled, allowing 3.20 goals per game. Ryan McDonagh and Mattias Ekholm have combined for 2.1 defensive point shares and 63 blocked shots but the rest of the unit has struggled, allowing opponents to easily carry the puck into the offensive zone and find open shots on the net. In addition, goaltender Juuse Saros is having a rough season in the net with a .905 save percentage and a 3.06 goals-against average on 464 shots.

Rating:

This is going to be a great game between two teams eager to make up ground in the standings. The Blue Jackets are looking to pull off the upset but the Predators, who are playing on an extra day of rest, look to overwhelm them on both ends of the ice. The Predators should find the back of the net at will against a Blue Jackets defense that allows 4.26 goals per game with Filip Forsberg, Matt Duchene, and the rest of the forward unit carrying the puck into the offensive zone and creating open shots with great puck movement. The Predators should also limit the Blue Jackets' offense with Mattias Ekholm and Ryan McDonagh creating turnovers in the blue line and limiting the Blue Jackets from establishing a strong offensive zone presence, allowing goaltender Juuse Saros to make plenty of big saves in the net. The Predators should win the game and cover the spread in a dominant win on their home ice.

Prediction: Predators -1.5 (+110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

Both offenses have struggled this season and the upcoming game should reflect that with both defensive units stepping up and making this game a low-scoring one. The Blue Jackets should limit the Predators' offense which is scoring only 2.55 goals per game with Vladislav Gavrikov, Erik Gudbranson, and the rest of the defensive unit creating turnovers in the defensive zone and limiting shots on the net, allowing goaltender Daniil Tarasov to make plenty of big saves. The Predators should eliminate a Blue Jackets offense that averages only 2.95 goals per game with Mattias Ekholm, Ryan McDonagh, and the rest of the defensive unit forcing turnovers in the neutral zone and defensive zone while goaltender Juuse Saros blanks the shots on the net. The Under should cover in a low-scoring game with both defenses stepping up.

Take the Under on 6.5 goals.

Prediction: Under 6.5
