Arizona Coyotes at Los Angeles Kings

When and Where: Tuesday, Dec. 4, Staples Center, Los Angeles, Calif., 10:35 p.m. EST.

Amazing the difference a hot goaltender makes. Unheralded Adin Hill looks to continue his run for the Arizona Coyotes as they take on a fully healthy Jonathan Quick and the Los Angeles Kings.

Hill gets NHL weekly honors after three wins and shutout

Arizona (12-11-2) has been riding the hot play of Hill as it bids for a fourth consecutive victory. The 22-year-old, called up due to an injury to Darcy Kuemper, picked up a win in relief of Antti Raanta before blanking Nashville and turning aside 25 shots in a 6-1 romp over St. Louis on Saturday night.

Hill was named NHL Second Star of the Week after posting a 0.43 goals-against average and .983 save percentage in seven periods of work.

Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet did not officially commit to Hill as a starter for this game, but with Raanta having his first full practice Monday since suffering a lower-body injury Wednsday night, Hill will likely be between the pipes.

Offensively, Arizona recorded its most goals since scoring a season-high seven in a rout of Tampa Bay on Oct. 27. Richard Panik had a goal and an assist in a four-goal second period against the Blues — ending an eight-game run without a point — while Derek Stepan had two helpers in that outburst.

Clayton Keller had a season-high with three points, notching a goal and two assists, and leads the Coyotes with eight goals and 18 points. Keller, though, had only one goal in the four matchups with Los Angeles last season as a rookie.

Quick finally gets win as Kings look to begin climb out of Pacific cellar

After missing 13 games due to a knee injury, Quick came back Thursday night at Edmonton and stopped 31 shots in a 3-2 loss to Edmonton. He looked like the Quick of old against Carolina on Sunday, turning aside 34 shots in a 2-0 victory for his first win of the season and his 50th career shutout.

Quick became the 30th goaltender in NHL history to reach the 50-shutout milestone — he is also the leader among American-born goaltenders — and also moved six wins shy of 300. Alec Martinez made sure Quick’s work would be rewarded, snapping a scoreless deadlock with 2:13 to play before Kyle Clifford added an empty-netter.

“If anything, you wanted to do it for Quickie because Jonathan Quick was simply outstanding,” Martinez told The Associated Press. “I’ve seen that guy play a lot of really good hockey, and that game was certainly up there. If for nothing else, do it for him.”

Quick did not face the Coyotes last season and is 18-17-4 with a 2.55 goals-against average and six shutouts lifetime versus Arizona.

Offense is still a concern for Los Angeles with a league-low 57 goals, and it became magnified Monday when Ilya Kovalchuk was put on IR after undergoing an ankle procedure. He has five goals and 14 points in 25 games but failed to register a point in his previous 11 as interim coach Willie Desjardins reduced his ice time.

To fill Kovalchuk’s roster spot, the Kings claimed Brendan Leipsic off waivers from Vancouver on Monday. He had two goals and three assists in 17 games for the Canucks and totaled five goals and 17 assists in 58 games with Vegas and Vancouver last season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Both Quick and Hill have played well of late, but Arizona has been able to string together wins on a more consistent basis than Los Angeles, and that is why the Coyotes are the lean here. Rick Tocchet’s team is doing a good job keeping it simple around Hill and giving him clear lanes to see the puck.

Prediction: Pick: Coyotes +100

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

These are two of the three lowest-scoring teams in the league, with Arizona 29th ahead of both Carolina and Los Angeles. With the two goaltenders coming off solid performances and well-rested, look for the defenses to be solid once more in a tight-checking contest.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 5.5 goals

Half-Time Side Pick
Rating:

While the Coyotes are not world-beaters in the first period — they have a plus-1 goal differential — they are noticeably better than the Kings, who are minus-10 in the first 20 minutes of games and have totaled two first period-goals in their last 10 contests against teams aside from Edmonton.

The safe play is taking Arizona and getting the half-goal at -210, but there is value in taking the Coyotes straight up on the money line at -110.

Prediction: Pick: Coyotes -110

Half-Time Total Bet
Rating:

This is a confidence pick in Hill and the Coyotes that they will keep the Kings frustrated in the first period while scoring the first goal. Arizona is a plus-1 during its three-game win streak while conceding just one first-period goal.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 1.5 goals
