Toronto Maple Leafs at New York Rangers

When and Where: Sunday, Feb. 10, Madison Square Garden, New York, N.Y., 7:05 p.m. EST.

The Toronto Maple Leafs look to wrap up a successful weekend on the road Sunday night before continuing their trek west as they face the New York Rangers.

Leafs still fighting to keep hold of second in Atlantic

Toronto (34-17-3) is not likely to overtake Tampa Bay for the Atlantic Division lead as it trails the NHL-best Lightning by 13 points, but it is locked in a three-way fight with Montreal and Boston for second in the division.

The Maple Leafs pushed their winning streak to five games with a 4-3 overtime win over the Canadiens on Saturday to kick off a five-game road swing. John Tavares set up William Nylander‘s tying goal with 11:25 to play in regulation before potting the winner 2:17 into the extra period.

Tavares has a three-game goal-scoring and multi-point streaks entering this game and leads Toronto with 33 goals. He had two assists against the Rangers in a 5-3 win Dec. 22 in his first game against them with Toronto and has totaled 14 goals and 26 assists in 44 career games versus New York.

Frederik Andersen could be back in net after making 35 saves against the Canadiens. He has a personal three-game winning streak entering this game and has helped Toronto claim at least one point in his last five starts (4-0-1).

Andersen made 25 saves in the December win over the Rangers and has won his last three starts against them. He is 5-2-1 with a 2.90 goals-against average versus the Rangers, including a 3-1-0 mark at Madison Square Garden.

Rangers try to wrap five-game homestand on up note

New York (23-23-8) was the only NHL team with Saturday night off and is looking to regroup after a 3-0 loss to Carolina on Friday night.

The Rangers are 1-2-1 entering the last leg of their five-game homestand and running out of time to make a playoff push, entering this contest nine points behind Pittsburgh for the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference.

Henrik Lundqvist finished 30 saves on 31 shots but New York was not able to find an equalizer before Carolina tallied twice into an empty net in the final 75 seconds. It was the third straight loss for Lundqvist (0-2-1), though it was the first time in 10 starts the veteran netminder allowed fewer than two goals.

“Tough one, because going into the game here I thought we all felt really inspired and excited to play,” Lundqvist told the Rangers official website, referring to the ceremonies honoring the 1994 Stanley Cup-winning team. “It’s great to see all these guys come in here, and you really get inspired, to see what they went through and accomplished. I think we all want to do the same, experience the same feelings and emotions. I was really excited to play the game and get going, and unfortunately we couldn’t get the win.”

Lundqvist did not play in the first meeting between the teams and allowed 12 goals on 67 shots in two starts and three appearances against Toronto last season for a 7.06 goals-against average. He is 15-11-5 lifetime versus the Maple Leafs with a 2.96 GAA and a pair of shutouts.

Rangers leading scorer Mika Zibanejad had totaled five goals and four assists in the four games before Friday’s shutout loss. He has been held to one goal in his last six matchups against Toronto.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

This is a form pick in taking the Maple Leafs, who are finding ways to win and can grab a nice confidence boost in this game before facing four Western Conference opponents on the road. Toronto has also been winning despite a spotty power play that has gone 1 for 9 during its four-game winning streak.

Prediction: Pick: Maple Leafs -160

Full-Game Total Pick

With Lundqvist coming off a solid game and the Maple Leafs playing consecutive road games on back-to-back nights, the hedge is the Rangers goaltender keeps his team in this game with another strong effort. Toronto has also played to a stalemate in terms of goals scored on the back end of games on consecutive nights with 25 for and against.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 6.5 goals

Full-Game Prop Bet

With taking the Leafs to win and the under for the game, this is a logical pick. New York is coming off a shutout loss, the second time in the last six games it was blanked. The Rangers have scored more than three goals just three times in their last 15 home games, and Toronto has not given up more than three on the road in its last seven contests.

Prediction: Pick: Rangers UNDER 3 goals

Half-Time Side Pick

This is a confidence pick the Leafs will lead 1-0 after 20 minutes based on the two teams’ forms. Toronto has scored four goals in the opening stanza during its winning streak while New York has tallied just twice in the first period of its last five games.

Prediction: Pick: Maple Leafs -0.5 (+147)

Half-Time Total Bet

This is a pick that combines New York’s lack of offense and Lundqvist coming off a strong effort in his last start for the Rangers. They are a net minus-2 in the first period but also have conceded just 46 goals.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 1.5 goals
