A pair of teams from the Metro Division will square off this evening as the Washington Capitals pay a visit to Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, PA to rumble with the Philadelphia Flyers. The Caps are off a 5-3 road loss to the Penguins, while the Flyers are off a 3-2 home win over the Senators.

Win Streak Ends In Pittsburgh

The Washington Capitals had been rolling along with a seven-game winning streak going, but they came to an end with a 5-3 loss to the Penguins on the road. The Caps will now look to get back on track, but it will not be easy as they Flyers have been hot of late as well. The Caps are currently leading the Metro Division by two points over the Islanders and by four points over the Penguins. The Caps had a 2-0 lead on Pittsburgh, but the Pens outscored them 5-1 the rest of the way. Scoring in the loss was Jakub Vrana, who scored twice and now has 21 on the year, and John Carlson, which was his 11th.

Absorbing the loss to the Penguins was Braden Holtby, who allowed four goals on 29 shot attempts to fall to 26-23 with a 2.91 GAA on the year, including 12-10 with a 3.13 GAA on the road. In his career, he has gone 10-12 with a 2.54 GAA against the Flyers. Washington has gone 20-15 out on the road for the year and they have averaged 3.23 gpg and have allowed 3.37 gpg in those games. The Capitals check in ranked 9th in power play conversions at 22.1% and 23rd in penalty kill at 79.1%.

Flyers Continue To Surprise

The Philadelphia Flyers had a very rough start to their year, but they have turned it around and have been steadily closing the gap in the Metro and in the race for the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference playoff standings. The Flyers enter this game in 10th place in the East and they are just five points behind the Blue Jackets and Canadiens, who are both tied for 8th place. Philadelphia has gone 4-1 in their last five games and 18-6 in their last 24. Philly is off a nice 3-2 home win over the Ottawa Senators and scoring in the win was Oskar Lindblom, which was his 13th of the year, Michael Raffl, which was his 6th and Scott Laughton, which was his 11th.

Grabbing the win against the Senators was Brian Elliott, who stopped 20 of the 22 shots that he faced to improve to 11-9 with a 2.59 GAA on the year. Carter Hart is slated to get the start in this one and he has gone 13-9 with a 2.79 GAA in this his first year in the league, including 10-5 with a 2.76 GAA here at home. This will be his first meeting with the Caps. The Flyers have gone 18-17 here at home for the year and they have averaged 3.06 gpg and have allowed 3.17 gpg in those games. The Flyers check in ranked 22nd in power play conversions at 17.1% and 26th in penalty kill at 77.9%.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

I will look for the Caps to take this one. The Flyers have been hot of late, but Washington is still the better team and will be angry after their loss to the Penguins. The Flyers are still in the race for a playoff spot so they will bring it in this game, but the Capitals are trying to fend off both the Islanders and Penguins in the Metro Division. Lastly, we note that the favorite is 20-8 the last 28 games in this series.

Prediction: Washington -130

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

This has been a high-scoring series and I will look for it to continue here. Washington’s road games have averaged  6.60 gpg, while Philly’s home games have averaged 6.23 gpg on the year. The offenses for both teams have been solid of late as Washington has averaged 3.70 gpg over their last 10, while the Flyers have averaged 3.60 gpg over the same stretch. Both offenses should continue their solid play in this one. The Over is 6-1 in Washington’s last seven after allowing five goals or more in their previous game and 6-1-1 in Philadelphia’s last eight vs. a team with a winning record, plus 25-9-2 in the last 36 meetings between these teams here in Philadelphia.

Prediction: Over 6.5
