The Chicago Blackhawks will host the Vancouver Canucks in a Wester Conference matchup Thursday night from the United Center. The Canucks dropped a 4-1 decision in Vegas on Tuesday night, and the Blackhawks were thumped 5-1 by the Avalanche in their latest action. The Canucks lead the season-series 2-0.
Canucks Scoring Woes Continue in Another Loss
The Vancouver Canucks’ goal scoring struggles continued in a 4-1 road loss to the Golden Knights on Tuesday night. Brandon Sutter snapped a seven-game point drought with his seventh goal of the season in the defeat. The 29-year old center is having a very quiet season, recording only 18 points in 52 games played, however, he is one of the few Canucks with a plus rating. Daniel Sedin has also been kept in check, notching only four points this month. The 16-year veteran left-winger is still a solid player, posting 48 points on the season. Sedin has tallied 57 points in 60 career games against the Blackhawks. Vancouver continues to play without point leader Brock Boeser who is out with a back injury. The Canucks are full of injuries right now and they are scuffling, currently riding a seven-game losing streak. They are only averaging 2.6 goals per game, ranking them 27th overall.
The Canucks continue to rotate between Jacob Markstrom and Anders Nilsson between the pipes. Markstrom is carrying a 2.80 GAA and an 18-26-6 record, and Nilsson owns a rough 3.50 GAA in 25 games on the season. Vancouver is now allowing an average of 3.2 goals per game, placing them 28th in the NHL.
Chicago Crushed by Colorado in Fourth Straight Loss
The Chicago Blackhawks goaltending issues resumed in their rough 5-1 home loss to the Avalanche on Tuesday evening. Blackhawks’ point leader Patrick Kane notched his 45th assist of the season in the defeat. The 10-year veteran star has tallied seven points in his last six games, and he now has 69 points on the season. Chicago’s captain Jonathan Toews assisted on Brent Seabrook’s goal in Tuesday’s loss for his 32nd helper of the season. The 29-year old center is playing well, collecting 12 points this month, and he is up to 52 points on the season. Toews has tallied 28 points in 36 career games against the Canucks. The Blackhawks have now lost four consecutive games and six out of their last seven games as their goaltending woes continue. They are scoring an average of 2.8 goals per game, ranking them 18th in the NHL.
Chicago continues to split the duties in net between Jean-Francois Berube and Anton Forsberg as Corey Crawford remains sidelined. Forsberg owns a 3.04 GAA and a .905 save percentage, while Berube possesses a poor 3.70 GAA to go with an .897 save percentage. The Blackhawks are conceding an average of 3.1 goals, placing them 21st overall.
The Vancouver Canucks are:
- under is 6-0 in their last 6 road games.
- under is 4-1 in their last 5 games overall.
- under is 4-1 in their last 5 games against the Western Conference.
The Chicago Blackhawks are:
- under is 12-3-1 in their last 16 home games against a team with a road winning percentage below .400.
- under is 19-5-2 in their last 26 home games overall.
I am taking the under in this contest with this high total. Vancouver is struggling in a big way offensively, scoring a total of only seven goals in their last seven games. They are dealing with several injuries including the absence of their leading scorer Brock Boeser, and I do not expect much offense from them again in this one. Furthermore, Chicago is also not scoring many goals, amassing only 12 goals in their last five home games, and the under has been a common trend for Chicago on their home ice.
