Edmonton Oilers (47-29-5) vs. San Jose Sharks (20-49-12)

The Edmonton Oilers (47-29-5) head to SAP Center at San Jose on Wednesday night to face off against the San Jose Sharks (20-49-12) in the regular-season finale for both of these teams, and we’ve got the Oilers vs. Sharks prediction as well as the latest odds update.

The Oilers look to sweep a four-game series against the Sharks. They already met twice in April, and Edmonton beat San Jose 3-2 as a -280 road fave and 4-2 as a -400 home fave. The Oilers are -220 road favorites this time around, and the total sits at 6.5 goals.

The Oilers are coming off a heavy loss

The Edmonton Oilers put an end to their three-game winning streak last Monday. After beating the St. Louis Blues 4-3, the San Jose Sharks 4-2, and the Winnipeg Jets 4-1, the Oilers were blanked by the Los Angeles Kings 5-0.

The Kings outshot the Oilers 36-21 on the night, and Edmonton amassed a whopping 53 penalty minutes in front of the home audience. Los Angeles converted two of its eight power-play opportunities, while Edmonton went 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Calvin Pickard gave up five goals on 36 shots, falling to 22-10-1 on the season.

The Oilers were without several key players last Monday. Connor McDavid (rest), Leon Draisaitl (undisclosed), Zach Hyman (undisclosed), Mattias Ekholm (undisclosed), Trent Frederic (ankle), and Jake Walman (undisclosed) all missed the Kings game and will probably sit out Wednesday’s clash against San Jose.

The Sharks are free-falling

The lowly San Jose Sharks extended their losing streak to 10 games last Monday, suffering a 2-1 overtime defeat at the Vancouver Canucks. The Sharks finished a four-game road trip with a 0-2-2 record, scoring 12 goals in the process and allowing 19 in return.

Rookie Macklin Celebrini gave the Sharks a lead at Vancouver, tallying his 25th goal of the season. The No. 1 pick from the 2024 NHL Draft increased his tally to 63 points, but the Canucks outshot the Sharks 37-16 and fully deserved to win.

Alexandar Georgiev allowed two goals on 37 shots against Vancouver, and the 29-year-old netminder is now 7-18-4 with a 3.95 GAA and a .873 save percentage in 29 starts and one relief appearance with the Sharks in 2024-25. Rookie Georgi Romanov (0-6-0; 3.89 GAA; .877 SV%) might get the nod on Wednesday.

Rating:

There is nothing to play for in this game. The Oilers are third in the Pacific Division and will play the LA Kings in the first round of the 2025 Stanley Cup, while the Sharks are dead last in the NHL, seven points behind the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Oilers will miss multiple important players on Wednesday night, but it is so hard to back the lowly Sharks. Whoever gets the nod for the Oilers will give his team a solid chance of winning this game, whereas the Sharks’ goaltending duo cannot be trusted even in a matchup against the shorthanded Oilers.

I expect to see some reaction from the Oilers after that 5-0 defeat against the Kings. They won’t go 0-for-6 with the man advantage once more. The Sharks’ defense has been awful all season, so I will take the Oilers at the puckline.

Prediction: Edmonton Oilers -1.5 (+113)

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

The Sharks cannot count on defenseman Mario Ferraro, who’s a vital part of their blueline. San Jose has allowed four or more goals seven times during its 10-game losing streak, so I will go with the over on the total.

The shorthanded Oilers’ offense will bounce back from a 5-0 loss against the Kings, but their defense won’t be able to shut the Sharks down. San Jose will find a way to score at least two goals in its season finale in front of the home audience. Edmonton has scored at least three goals in six of its previous nine games overall.

Prediction: Over 6.5 Goals (-105)
