The Dallas Stars will travel to Rogers Arena on Thursday night as they prepare for a Western Conference showdown against the Vancouver Canucks Vancouver enters this game tied for third place in the Pacific Division standings with 23 points through their first 19 contests but they’ve fallen on tough times as of late. Following an encouraging start, Vancouver is just 1-3-1 over their last five games. The Canucks will have a chance to catch the Stars off-guard in this one, as Dallas will be coming off the second game of a back-to-back. The Stars are in the midst of a four-game road trip through Western Canada, which will conclude in Edmonton on Saturday. Dallas has revived its season over the last 10 games, going 8-1-1 during that span. Can the Stars keep their momentum going on the road in Vancouver on Thursday evening?

Canucks snap four-game slide

Vancouver snapped a four-game slide against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night with a 5-3 victory at home. Elias Petersson scored two goals in the third period while Thatcher Demko allowed only three goals in 37 shots to lift the Canucks. Tanner Pearson also scored twice, once on the power play and once on the penalty kill, and Adam Gaudette also added a goal for Vancouver, who notched three power-play goals in all three of their opportunities with the man advantage. Peterson leads the team in points (23), goals (8), and assists (15) so far this season.  The team was without starting goaltender Jacob Markstrom in the win, as the Canucks’ goaltender announced over the weekend that his father had died back home in Sweden. Markstrom’s father, 59, died of cancer over the weekend but he was granted a five-day absence from the team to visit his father during the final stages of his cancer back in October. Despite the overwhelming range of emotions that he’s experienced over the last few months, Markstrom has still managed to post a .918 save percentage in 12 starts. The Canucks’ starter could be back between the pipes as soon as Thursday night. He comes into the week with a 5-4-2 overall record to go along with a 2.43 GAA. Markstrom started twice against Dallas last season, going 2-0-0 with a 1.85 GAA and .953 save percentage in those matchups. If he’s unable to go, Demko will likely make another start. The 23-year-old has performed admirably in a backup role this season, going 5-2-0 with a 2.13 GAA and .931 save percentage in seven starts.  https://twitter.com/NHLNetwork/status/1194841386228445184 Special teams played a major part in Vancouver’s last game, as they notched four combined goals (one shorthanded and three on the power play in a 5-3 win. The Canucks come in ranked fifth in the NHL with the man advantage this season, converting on 25 percent of their power-play opportunities. They also are tied for ninth in the NHL on the penalty kill, fending off 83.3 percent of their total penalties for the season with two shorthanded goals.
