Mystics Drop Four of Five

The Washington Mystics are stuck in last place in the Eastern Conference, trailing Atlanta by three games for fifth. In the overall league standings, they sit in 11th, as the Sparks, Wings and Mystics all have just five wins on the season. In the WNBA, the top eight regardless of conference advance to the playoffs, and the Mystics are four games behind the Chicago Sky for the 8-seed. In their last game, they lost despite getting 15 points and three made threes from Ariel Atkins in the game against Minnesota.

Atkins is the leading scorer for the Mystics and has started in every game this season. The 5'10 guard is averaging 14.5 PPG and 3.6 APG, and leads the team in steals with 1.6 per game. Atkins has been consistent, as she has reached double figures in each of her last six games, but has not scored over 20 points in the stretch. Stefanie Dolson is their center, and also their best three-point shooter on the team. She leads the team with 2.1 made threes per game while shooting 49.5% from deep. Dolson averages 10.5 PPG and 4.8 RPG. Julie Vanloo is their point guard, she leads the team in assists with 5.1 per game, and also scores another 7.8 PPG from the perimeter. The Mystics did not place any players on the All-Star Team this season.

The Mystics are 11th in the league in scoring with 78.5 PPG, and their defense ranks 7th by allowing 83.0 PPG. They make 9.7 threes per game as a team, which is 4th in the league, and are second in three point percentage posting a 36.3% average from deep as a team.

Indiana in a Distant Third

Indiana has climbed up to third in the Eastern Conference standings, but they still only have a 9-13 record overall. The Sun and the Liberty are way out ahead in the East, with the four other teams at least 8.5 games off the lead. Indiana is 7th in the overall standings, holding on to a playoff spot before the All-Star Break. In their last game, Caitlin Clark led the way with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds, getting the first-ever triple-double by a rookie in WNBA history.

Clark was just named as a participant in the All-Star Game, playing for the Team WNBA roster which will take on the USA Olympic team. She is second on the team in scoring with 16.1 PPG and is second in the entire league in assists with 7.6 per game. Clark is the top shooter on the team, with 2.7 made threes per game. Two other Fever players made the WNBA team for the All-Star game, Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell. Boston is last year's number one pick, she is a 6'5 forward getting 13.5 PPG and 8.4 RPG. Mitchell is a 5'8 guard who can also shoot from the outside, she leads the team with 16.5 PPG.

The Fever rank 7th in the league in scoring with 80.6 PPG, and their defense ranks 11th by allowing 87.2 PPG. The Fever play fast offensively, looking for a quick shot from one of their stars, which leads to more possessions and points from their opponent. The Fever make the 6th most threes per game, and shoot it at 34.6%, which is fourth best in the league.

Rating:

This number is not big enough, as there is a mismatch of talent in this game, and it does not revolve just around Caitlin Clark. Yes, Clark is coming off the first-ever triple-double as a rookie in the WNBA, but the Fever also has three All-Stars on the team, and the Mystics do not have any. The Mystics' best player is Atkins, but she cannot match up with both Clark and Mitchell on the perimeter, and both of those players can shoot it from deep. Clark and Mitchell both make 2.4 threes or more per game and can stretch the floor to allow Aliyah Boston to work on the inside. The Mystics are one of the worst teams in the league, and the Fever just climbed up to third in the East with positive momentum. The Fever can utilize mismatches on the floor, leading to a big win over the Mystics in this one.

Take the Fever to win and cover.

Prediction: Fever -5.5

Rating:

The Fever play at a fast pace and sacrifice defense on the other end. The Fever rank just 11th in the league in points allowed, which is created by extra possessions and the lack of a true rim protector on their defensive back line. Boston is a strong post player, but does not block many shots around the rim, which will allow the Mystics to get points in the paint and in transition. Washington will still be able to find points with Atkins and Dolson running the inside-out game, and Washington is not excellent on the defensive end either. The Mystics rank 7th in the league in points allowed and will have a hard time matching up with the three top scorers on Indiana. The Fever will push the pace, and push this game over the total.

Take the over.
