College Football Best Bets for September 6
- Washington State vs Washington: Under 51.5 (-106)
- Louisville vs Ole Miss: Louisville +6.5 (+100)
- Wisconsin vs Notre Dame: Under 47.5 (-110)
Washington State vs Washington Best Bet: Under 51.5
The 118th Apple Cup begins Sunday's schedule at Husky Stadium, where No. 17 Washington is favored by more than three touchdowns.
The best bet from the full Washington State vs Washington prediction is Under 51.5 (-106).
Washington has the biggest talent and quarterback advantages in the matchup, but the Huskies enter the opener replacing major offensive production.
Quarterback Demond Williams Jr. returns, but Washington no longer has Jonah Coleman or Denzel Boston, and several offensive-line spots are being filled by younger players.
Washington State has even more change.
Kirby Moore begins his first season as head coach with 50 new players in the program, while UC Davis transfer Caden Pinnick makes his first FBS start at quarterback.
That gives both teams reasons to avoid unnecessary early-game risk.
Washington can lean on Williams' mobility and a strong defensive unit rather than forcing an aggressive passing game. Washington State has an obvious incentive to protect Pinnick with the run game, shorter throws and manageable down-and-distance situations.
The total has moved from roughly 50.5 to 51.5, giving Under bettors a slightly better number despite the offensive uncertainty on both sides.
Washington can still win this game comfortably without turning it into a shootout. A score in the range of Washington 34, Washington State 13 stays below the current total while still producing a decisive Huskies victory.
Best Bet: Washington State-Washington Under 51.5 (-106)
Louisville vs Ole Miss Best Bet: Louisville +6.5
Sunday's only ranked-versus-ranked matchup takes place at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, with No. 9 Ole Miss favored over No. 24 Louisville.
The current Louisville vs Ole Miss prediction makes Louisville +6.5 (+100) the preferred side.
Ole Miss deserves to be favored.
Trinidad Chambliss returns after throwing for 3,937 yards with 22 touchdowns and only three interceptions last season, while All-American running back Kewan Lacy is back after rushing for 1,567 yards and 24 touchdowns.
Louisville has a much bigger question at quarterback with Ohio State transfer Lincoln Kienholz making his first college start.
But the number has become the central issue.
Ole Miss traded as high as -7.5 during the week before moving back below the key touchdown. At +6.5, Louisville only needs to keep the matchup within one possession.
The Cardinals have enough around Kienholz to do that.
Jeff Brohm can lean on a strong running back group led by Isaac Brown, while Louisville's defense returns enough pass-rush talent to make Chambliss work rather than allowing Ole Miss to dictate every possession.
The neutral-site setting also removes a conventional Ole Miss home-field advantage.
If Louisville can avoid an early two-score deficit and keep Kienholz out of obvious passing situations, the Cardinals have a realistic path to remaining within one possession throughout the fourth quarter.
A return to +7 would be even better, but +6.5 remains playable at the current price.
Best Bet: Louisville +6.5 (+100)
Wisconsin vs Notre Dame Best Bet: Under 47.5
The final game on Sunday's card sends Wisconsin and No. 4 Notre Dame to Lambeau Field for the Shamrock Series.
Notre Dame is favored by roughly three touchdowns, but the strongest wager from the Wisconsin vs Notre Dame prediction is the Under 47.5 (-110).
The market has already moved in that direction.
The total opened around 47.5 and has been available closer to 46.5 at several books, reflecting questions about Wisconsin's ability to generate sustained offense against one of the country's deepest defenses.
Notre Dame brings back CJ Carr after he threw for 2,741 yards and 24 touchdowns last season, but the Irish do not necessarily need a high-possession game to control this matchup.
Wisconsin begins the year with Old Dominion transfer Colton Joseph at quarterback and faces a difficult assignment against Notre Dame's defensive front and secondary.
The Badgers' clearest path is to shorten the game.
That means running the football, using Joseph's mobility, avoiding obvious passing downs and keeping Carr on the sideline as long as possible.
Notre Dame can win comfortably in that type of game without the combined score climbing into the 50s.
The major danger to the Under is turnovers. A short field or defensive touchdown could allow Notre Dame to create points without needing long offensive drives.
If Wisconsin protects the football, however, the matchup favors a controlled Irish victory rather than a back-and-forth scoring game.
Best Bet: Wisconsin-Notre Dame Under 47.5 (-110)
Sunday College Football Picks
Sunday's three selections attack the slate in different ways.
Washington State-Washington Under 51.5 targets two offenses entering the opener with significant personnel change.
Louisville +6.5 takes the points with a ranked underdog in a neutral-site game where the spread has already resisted Ole Miss -7 and higher.
Wisconsin-Notre Dame Under 47.5 follows a total that has already attracted Under money and a matchup where Wisconsin's best strategy should be to reduce possessions.
