Jordan Spieth Has a Chance to Change His FedExCup Position

Spieth does not have much separation from the field. Michael Kim, Michael Thorbjornsen, Jake Knapp and Kurt Kitayama also shot 65 on Thursday, leaving five players tied at 5-under entering the second round.

Kim is particularly interesting from a FedExCup perspective. He entered Memphis at No. 61 in the standings, considerably farther outside the BMW Championship field than Spieth. His opening 65 gives him an opportunity to make one of the largest moves of the week if he remains near the top of the board.

That keeps the Friday leaderboard unusually connected to the playoff standings. A player does not need to win the FedEx St. Jude Championship to advance, but golfers starting outside the top 50 cannot afford to surrender many positions over the remaining three rounds.

FedExCup Top 50 Adds Pressure to Round 2

The playoff format creates more urgency than a normal Friday at a PGA Tour event. Michael Brennan entered the tournament No. 47, followed by Matt McCarty, Keith Mitchell and McNealy in the final four positions above the top-50 line.

Harris English, Max Homa, Sungjae Im and Spieth began immediately outside it.

Those positions can change substantially before Sunday. For Spieth and the other bubble players, every move up or down the FedEx St. Jude leaderboard affects more than this week's finish.

McIlroy entered the playoffs safely inside the advancement line, so his season is not facing the same immediate danger as Spieth's. His second round is instead about recovering from an uneven start and putting himself back into position for the weekend.

McIlroy began Friday alongside Scottie Scheffler at 11:30 a.m. local time. Scheffler entered Memphis as the FedExCup points leader, giving the pairing a very different playoff dynamic from the golfers fighting around No. 50.

Robert MacIntyre Withdraws Before Round 2

The field became smaller before Friday's play when Robert MacIntyre withdrew from the tournament. MacIntyre shot a 12-over 82 in the opening round before pulling out ahead of Round 2.

Daniel Berger had already withdrawn before the tournament because of injury, reducing the original 70-player playoff field to 69 starters.

With MacIntyre also out, the Friday field is smaller again, although the FedEx St. Jude remains a no-cut event for the players continuing in Memphis.

Spieth is the golfer to watch most closely Friday because his tournament position and FedExCup position are moving together.

He started the week outside the BMW Championship field and answered immediately with one of the best rounds on the course. Another strong round would put Spieth in position to turn a No. 54 starting point into a postseason escape.

Michael Kim has an even steeper climb from No. 61. His share of the first-round lead puts him in position to make significant progress if he can stay near the front of the leaderboard.

McIlroy faces the opposite challenge. His opening 74 left him well behind the leaders, and Friday is about recovering enough ground to make the weekend meaningful from a tournament-contending perspective.
