Wednesday's MLB schedule gives us three late-game betting angles worth targeting, led by the Houston Astros getting 1.5 runs against Philadelphia.

The card also includes Arizona on the moneyline against Kansas City and a line-sensitive Under in the Angels-Red Sox matchup at Fenway Park.

Odds can move throughout the day, so the number matters. The prices below reflect the available market and current Winners & Whiners free-play board at the time of writing.

Astros +1.5 (-152) vs. Phillies

Best Bet: Houston Astros +1.5 (-152)

Houston is our favorite play on Wednesday's card.

The Astros already took the series opener 6-5 on Tuesday, continuing a strong recent run against Philadelphia while getting contributions from throughout the lineup.

Wednesday's starting-pitching matchup is much tougher.

Hunter Brown gets the ball for Houston with a 5-3 record and 3.31 ERA. Philadelphia counters with Cristopher Sรกnchez, who enters 16-5 with an excellent 2.58 ERA.

That is exactly why taking the extra 1.5 runs makes more sense than chasing Houston outright.

The current moneyline has Philadelphia favored in roughly the -155 to -165 range, while Houston is around +135. Moving to the run line gives us the Astros +1.5 at approximately -152.

Houston's recent run-line form also supports the approach.

The Astros have covered six consecutive games, while Philadelphia has struggled to cover during its recent stretch. Houston has also covered seven of the last eight meetings between these clubs.

Sรกnchez deserves respect, especially considering the season he is having.

But Brown gives Houston a starter capable of keeping this game close, and Tuesday showed that the Astros can create offense even when their biggest names do not carry the lineup.

Christian Walker, Daulton Varsho and Cam Smith all homered in the opener.

Houston also enters Wednesday still fighting for postseason positioning, making every game meaningful during this September road trip.

Rather than asking the Astros to beat one of baseball's better teams for a second straight night, take the insurance.

MLB Best Bet: Astros +1.5 (-152)

Diamondbacks Moneyline (-115) vs. Royals

Best Bet: Arizona Diamondbacks Moneyline (-115)

Arizona is the most price-sensitive side on today's card.

The Diamondbacks enter Wednesday at approximately -112 to -115 against Kansas City after extending their winning streak to four games.

Arizona beat the Royals 5-3 in 11 innings Tuesday and has quietly become one of the hottest teams in the National League.

The Diamondbacks are now 78-68 and have gone 33-21 since July 9, the best record in the National League over that span.

Kansas City is moving the other way.

The Royals enter 64-82 and have lost seven of their last nine games.

That recent separation is the main reason to prefer Arizona at a near pick'em price.

The starting-pitching matchup deserves more caution.

Zac Gallen is listed as Arizona's starter, but his 3-9 record and 6.34 ERA make it difficult to characterize this as a pitching mismatch in the Diamondbacks' favor.

Daniel Lynch IV has a 3.51 ERA for Kansas City.

That changes the nature of the bet.

We're not backing Arizona because Gallen has better season-long numbers.

We're backing the stronger team at a manageable moneyline price.

Arizona's lineup has been producing during the winning streak, Ketel Marte has hit safely in every game since returning, and the Diamondbacks continue to play meaningful baseball in the National League Wild Card race.

Kansas City has little margin for error and continues to struggle to turn competitive games into wins.

At -112 to -115, the Diamondbacks remain playable.

If Arizona moves significantly beyond that range, the value becomes less appealing.

MLB Best Bet: Diamondbacks Moneyline (-115)

Angels vs. Red Sox Under 9.5 (-122)

Best Bet: Under 9.5 (-122)

This is the number we want.

The Angels and Red Sox meet at 6:45 p.m. ET at Fenway Park with Ryan Johnson facing Jake Bennett.

Johnson enters 3-8 with a 5.17 ERA, which is obviously the biggest concern for an Under.

Bennett provides the stronger half of the pitching matchup.

The Boston left-hander is 9-6 with a 3.34 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP, and he has shown excellent command.

The offensive profiles also make a total of 9.5 interesting.

Los Angeles has been one of the lower-scoring teams in baseball this season, while Boston's offense has been more middle-of-the-pack than dominant.

That creates enough room for the Under at 9.5 even with Johnson's weaker numbers.

There is, however, an important weather factor.

Conditions at Fenway are expected to be warm with a noticeable breeze blowing out toward left field.

That is not ideal Under weather.

It is why we do not want to lose the extra half-run.

Some parts of the broader market have already shown a total of 9 instead of 9.5.

At 9.5, we still have enough cushion for a 5-4 game to cash.

At 9, the same score becomes a push and the bet becomes materially less attractive.

Target the original 9.5.

MLB Best Bet: Angels-Red Sox Under 9.5 (-122)

MLB Best Bets for Wednesday Night

Houston +1.5 is the strongest combination of matchup and price on Wednesday's card.

Brown gives the Astros a realistic chance to stay with Sรกnchez and the Phillies, while the extra run protects against another close game after Tuesday's one-run Houston victory.

Arizona is more dependent on team form than starting pitching, but the Diamondbacks' four-game winning streak and strong second-half run make the near-even moneyline price attractive against a Kansas City club that has dropped seven of nine.

The Boston total requires the most discipline.

Under 9.5 is the play.

Do not treat Under 9 as the same wager.

Wednesday's final MLB card:

  • Astros +1.5 (-152)
  • Diamondbacks ML (-115)
  • Angels-Red Sox Under 9.5 (-122)
