UFC on Fox 30: John Makdessi vs. Ross Pearson Betting Prediction

Image licensed from USA Today Sports

In the UFC’s stacked lightweight division, two veteran strikers will clash to see who comes out on top this Saturday in Calgary, Canada. Both fighters are 33-years-of-age and need to continue winning to stay relevant.

John “The Bull” Makdessi

Fighting out of a sideways stance, indicative of his traditional martial arts background, John Makdessi is a skilled kickboxer. He throws lots of feints to keep his opponents guessing and has some good leg kicks too.

Having traded wins and losses in recent years, Makdessi hopes to gain some momentum under famed striking coach, Duke Roufus.

In 2016 fighting Hawaiian brawler, Yancy Medeiros, Makdessi was unfortunate to be on the losing end of the scorecards after three good rounds. However, in his most recent performance, he was able to comprehensively outstrike the heavy-handed Abel Trujillo. While “The Bull” showcased a diverse range of well-timed strikes, it’s worth noting that Trujillo looked somewhat flat and has never been the most technical striker. Typically, Trujillo is primarily known for winging power punches - so it could be looked at as a favorable matchup for Makdessi.

Against his opponent this weekend, he’ll have a stiffer challenge.

Ross “The Real Deal” Pearson

Sunderland slugger, Ross Pearson, has also struggled to string together wins in his UFC career. Coming off a terrible losing streak (albeit against good competition), Pearson was able to win his last fight against Japanese striker, Mizuno Hirota. Although the contest was competitive, we saw Pearson showcase his trademark slips and accurate punches to secure a decision victory.

While Pearson doesn’t have the diverse offensive arsenal of Makdessi, his boxing-centric style is certainly effective. Against surging lightweight contender, Dan Hooker, Pearson won the first round before eventually being caught by a knee from hell in the second.

Against aggressive kickboxer, Paul Felder, many thought Pearson would be demolished. However, Pearson’s crisp boxing and slips were the story of the fight - proving he can definitely show up when the odds are against him.

Who Wins?

It’s understandable why Makdessi is the favorite. Although both fighters are the same age, Pearson has more significant mileage on his body. That being said, so long as Pearson hasn’t dropped off a cliff athletically - this should still be a close fight.

With how the lines have moved, I think Pearson is the right side at +165.

Since Pearson and Makdessi’s last fights both looked like sparring matches at range, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more of the same here. For that reason, I’m most confident in predicting that the judges decide the outcome of this one.

Pick: Fight goes to decision -250
