Who Are the Most Disappointing Teams in College Football So Far?

Written by

We have three weeks of the college football season in the books already. There have been plenty of situations with the status quo as Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Clemson are still ranked as the top four teams in the country. UCF keeps rolling along even with Scott Frost moving back to his alma mater in Nebraska, while other teams like Penn State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame and Auburn occupy slots in the top 10. Teams like Cal, Colorado, Buffalo, Kentucky, Missouri, Minnesota and Indiana are off to perfect marks so far. On the flip side, we’ve seen teams that we expected to struggle do so. New Mexico State is the lone four loss team in the nation as they head into what could be the pillow fight of the year when they face a UTEP team that has lost 15 straight. The Miners are 0-3 and have been outscored 106-34. San Jose State, UTSA, Central Michigan, Miami (OH), Old Dominion, Western Kentucky, North Carolina and SMU are among the other winless programs as we head into week 4. Of course, no one expected much from those teams.

The Five Best Bets in College Football This Week

Written by

There’s always a lot of uncertainty coming into the first week of the college football season. We don’t have preseason games to give us a glimpse of what to analyze, only practice reports and expectations. Great Players, Bad Teams: Some of the Top Guys You Never Heard of In College Football

Written by

In the world of college football, the hierarchy of being a known commodity is simple. If you’re a player at a big name school, say a Power Five program, the odds are pretty good that you’re known. If you’re a force to be reckoned with on a mid-major program, like McKenzie Milton of UCF or Ed Oliver at Houston, you become known because of your performances on the field that help your program either contend for a conference title, or, in the case of UCF, put together an unbeaten season. Even in the case of programs like Army or Navy, you get known because of the publicity and notoriety that surrounds the yearly battle between the service academies.

Turning Up the Heat: Coaches on the Hot Seat in College Football

Written by

Let’s be honest: there are always going to be coaching changes in the world of sports, be it professional or collegiate. Guys are going to get burned out, step down, take a job somewhere else and a new guy steps in to take over that spot. We constantly hear rumors about who could end up where, who might be getting the ax and why. It’s inevitable that at some point, be it next week, next month, next year, next decade, that your favorite team, in any sport, is going to make a change at the top. Someone other than the individual that you knew as the head person in charge of the on-field decisions of an organization will be calling the shots.

Which schools are trying to figure out who will start and who will be backing up? We’ll break down some of the biggest QB battles in the nation below.

San Diego State Aztecs Season Preview - Life After Penny

Written by

What Happened Last Year It was an enjoyable season for the Aztecs, who finished with a 10-3 record overall and were second in the Mountain West’s West Division. They fell short of winning the division with back-to-back losses at home to Boise State and Fresno State, who both ended up playing in the conference title game. […]

South Carolina Gamecocks Season Preview - Time to Join the Elite?

Written by

What Happened Last Year The Gamecocks finished with a respectable 9-4 record overall, 5-3 in the SEC, in their second year with Will Muschamp at the helm. They did have the benefit of not being in the tougher West Division and was able to compile a decent season after a 3-2 start and losing two of […]

Where Does the Power Lie In College Football? - Ranking the Divisions

Written by

With just a couple weeks until the college football season gets underway in earnest, there are a lot of potential questions floating around in the ether. Who might be in the College Football Playoff come the end of the season? Which teams may surprise or bottom out in 2018? Could we see a school outside the Power Five in the playoff? One of the interesting questions that crops up often is which conference or division within a conference is the toughest. Fans of a specific school will always talk about how difficult it is for Team X to stay in contention for a CFP spot because of the competition. While in some cases, there’s something to that, in others, it’s just hot air. Who has it the toughest and who should quit crying? We’ll break it down for you, from the toughest division to the easiest, in our opinion.

#2 Clemson Tigers Season Preview - Can Dabo Swinney Lead Them to a Fourth Straight CFP Appearance?

Written by

The Clemson Tigers finished #4 in the final AP poll last season after losing in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff to eventual champion Alabama. The Tigers have a lot of returning talent on both sides of the ball: seven starters are back on offense while eight are back defensively for a team that won the ACC Atlantic Division crown and the ACC Championship. With some tough games on the slate, it will test Clemson’s resolve as they try to establish some playmakers on the outside. Can Dabo Swinney put together another successful season down in Death Valley and lead Clemson back to the promised land?

#3 Wisconsin Badgers Season Preview - Big Plans in the Big Ten

Written by

What happened last year The Badgers fell just short of making their first appearance in the College Football Playoff. However, they weren’t able to pull through, losing a hard-fought 27-21 contest to Ohio […]

# 4 Georgia Bulldogs Season Preview - These Dawgs Have Some Bite

Written by

The Georgia Bulldogs are back as contenders for a National Championship under head coach Kirby Smart after falling to Alabama in the 2017 Championship. Quarterback Jake Fromm is set for a big year, and J.R. Reed highlights a strong defensive core.

#5 Ohio State Buckeyes Season Preview - Can Dwayne Haskins Lead Them to the National Title? - 2018

Written by

In 2017, the Ohio State Buckeyes started the season ranked #2 and had hopes of returning to the College Football Playoff. Those hopes took a hit with a week 2 loss to #5 Oklahoma at home and were all but wiped out in the first weekend of November. Ohio State finished the season with five straight victories but couldn’t push their way back into the CFP. There is a lot of uncertainty swirling around Columbus: Urban Meyer as placed on administrative leave on August 1 as further allegations were made in the situation involving receivers coach Zach Smith, who was fired last week. Can the Buckeyes find a way to get the team back in national title contention after a one year absence from the CFP?

#6 Oklahoma Sooners Season Preview - Can the Offense Reload?

Written by

What happened last year? The Sooners remain the only team from the Big 12 to reach the College Football Playoff, and they’ve moved to 0-2 overall. They folded in an eventual 54-48 double-overtime loss to Georgia in the semifinals. The defense was the biggest problem for the conference champions all year, and it ultimately cost […]

#9 Penn State Season Preview - Can Trace McSorley Win the Heisman AND Carry Penn State to CFP Berth?

Written by

Last season, the Penn State Nittany Lions finished #8 in the AP poll as they capped their season with a win over Washington in the Fiesta Bowl. Penn State was rolling in the early part of the season but a couple of losses in late October and early November derailed their momentum and sent them tumbling out of the picture for the College Football Playoff. The Nittany Lions rebounded and closed the season strong but with so many departures from a season ago, can coach James Franklin lead the team to the promised land?

#10 Notre Dame Season Preview - This Offense Could Be Kelly’s Best Yet

#11 Auburn Tigers Season Preview - Can the Tigers Be the Best in Their State?

Written by

What happened last year It was a pretty successful season in a very top-heavy SEC conference, but they certainly didn’t get the conclusion they wanted. They finished 7-1 in the West Division and earned the right to play in the conference title game, but fell in a 28-7 blowout to Georgia. They also fell just […]

#12 Michigan State Season Preview - Can Sparty Break Through?

Written by

What Happened Last Year The Spartans finished in second place in the tough Big Ten East Division. In a brutal three-game stretch near the turn to November, they lost to Northwestern in triple-overtime, edged out Penn State at home, and then completely tanked 48-3 at Ohio State, which essentially helped the Buckeyes win the division. […]

#13 Michigan Wolverines Season Preview - Is This Finally the Year for Jim Harbaugh?

Written by

Despite an excellent defense, the Michigan Wolverines were unable to be a major threat in the Big Ten Conference in 2017. The offense was inconsistent and the team shuffled through three different quarterbacks with no real answer at the position. This year, it seems that coach Jim Harbaugh, who helped mold Andrew Luck at Stanford, will have an elite quarterback to run the offense this season. With the bulk of last year’s starters returning on both sides of the ball plus the potential for superior QB play, can the Wolverines break through in 2018?

Well, I sent up smoke signals for all the information I could on the team and below is what I came up with.

Written by

The USC Trojans had a couple of mediocre seasons under Steve Sarkisian, but under Clay Helton, they have gone 21-6 the last two years. The Trojans have a huge hole to fill at quarterback, but they are still the favorites to win the South Division. Let’s take a gander at how the Trojans stack up for 2018.

#19 Virginia Tech Hokies Season Preview - Can They Fill the Holes Defensively? - 2018 Season Preview

Written by

The Virginia Tech Hokies finished the 2017 season #24 in the nation, a year where they were ranked every week of the season. The Hokies were as high as #12 at the end of September and their lowest ranking was where they finished the season. Still, things have been good for Virginia Tech under Justin Fuente: the team has won 19 games in the two seasons since he took over for the retired Frank Beamer. Can Fuente fill in some of the gaps that opened up after last season and bring the Hokies back to prominence in a tough ACC?

#20 Mississippi State Bulldogs Season Preview - The Bulldogs Get Their Man

#22 LSU Tigers Season Preview - The Offense Lost A Lot

Written by

The LSU Tigers have been a very consistent team over the years as they have posted at least eight wins in each of their last 18 seasons. This year they have just 10 starters back and rate as 129th in experience in the nation, so duplicating last year’s win total will be tough. Let’s take a gander at how the Bayou Bengals stack up this year.

#23 Oregon Ducks Season Preview - Can Cristobal Bring the Ducks Back to Relevance?

Written by

The 2017 campaign was an up and down season for the Oregon Ducks even with a return to a bowl game after finishing 4-8 in 2016. The Ducks will start the year with their third head coach in as many seasons as the Willie Taggart era is over in Eugene, almost before it started. Oregon lost three straight in October to drop back to 4-4 on the season before winning three of their final four regular season games. The Ducks were ranked just one week in 2017, reaching #24, before getting knocked out after a 37-35 loss to Arizona State. Can Oregon return to form and challenge for the Pac-12 North crown?

#25 Texas Longhorns Season Preview - The Defense Will Be Fierce

Written by

The Texas Longhorns have not had great success of late as they have topped eight wins just once since 2009 and they have gone just 23-27 over their last four years. The Longhorns have 14 starters back from that team and bring in the 5th rated recruiting class in the nation. How will they stack up this year? Let’s take a look.
