Uruguay was a slight favorite to beat Russia at the Cosmos Arena in Samara on Monday, June 25, and they surpassed the expectations with a huge 3-0 victory. The Sky Blues easily covered the 0 spread, while the game went over 2.5 goals. Oscar Tabarez’s side secured a top spot in the Group A with three points, while Stanislav Cherchesov’s team finished in the second place as both teams will be playing in the Round of 16.
Uruguay looked sharp at the start of the game and already in the 10th minute, Luis Suarez fired a daisy-cutter inside the right post from the free kick just outside the box, and Igor Akinfeev couldn’t see the ball clearly which beat him to his near post. Two minutes later, Denis Cheryshev’s attempt was saved by Fernando Muslera, and that was pretty much it from the Sbornaya on this one. Cheryshev’s own goals doubled Uruguay’s lead in the 23rd minute, while Igor Smolnikov received a second yellow card in the 36th minute, and at that point, it was evident that the Sky Blues are going to win at +179.
Tabarez’ men continued with domination in the second half and tried to score the third, and they managed to do so in the 90th minute. Cristian Rodriguez found himself in space on the edge of the box and smashed a glorious looking effort towards the roof of the net, but Akinfeev thwarts him with a great two-handed save. Diego Godin also had a chance from the resulting corner, while Edinson Cavani was the quickest to react to the rebound and beat the keeper from close range to set the final score, 3-0. Cavani’s first goal at the World Cup helped the punters who backed over 2.5 goals at +143, while all who bet against both teams to score at -120 were also delighted with the result.
Uruguay’s chances to win the World Cup are +2500, which means that they are considered as one of the favorites from the shadow to lift the trophy, while the Sky Blues are +120 to make it to the quarter-finals. On the other hand, Russia is +5000 to win the World Cup, while the Sbornaya is +250 to reach the quarter-finals.
