The tilt between Uruguay and France will be played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium in Nizhny Novgorod on July 6th. Both teams topped their respective groups and grabbed narrow wins in the Round of 16, so we can expect a close duel and hopefully goals as it was the case in the 1/8 finals.
Uruguay vs. France
Three-Way: 1: Uruguay +359; X: +220 Draw; 2: France +100
Spread +0.5: Uruguay -112; France +104
Total 2.5 goals: Over +175; Under -217
The Sky Blues collected maximum nine points in the group stage as they didn’t have real troubles in a battle with the hosts Russia for the top spot and now are in a seven-game winning run including the preparation period prior to the World Cup. Uruguay was perhaps inferior to Portugal in the Round of 16 as they had just three shots on target and 39% of ball possession, but two of these shots ended in the back of the net. Edinson Cavani scored a brace in his best performance at the tournament and the Uruguayans defended excellently in the final 30 minutes of the tilt to preserve a 2-1 victory. However, Cavani sustained a calf injury and had to be subbed off, and his availability for the quarter-final clash is still uncertain. Uruguay’s chances to win the World Cup are now +1600, while the Sky Blues are +700 to reach the finals.
The Blues also secured the first place in their group and then faced Argentina in one of the most exciting games at the World Cup so far, winning 4-3 after coming from behind. France blitzkrieg the Albiceleste in 11 minutes in the second half, scoring three goals through Benjamin Pavard and Kylian Mbappe who netted twice to make it 4-2 for France, and Argentina only managed to soften the defeat with Sergio Aguero’s header in the 93rd minute. Didier Deschamps’ side showed a real quality at the times and found a new weapon – Mbappe, who destroyed the Argentineans on the break, so the sturdy but not very fast centre-back duo Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez could have a bunch of problems guarding him. France’s chances to win the World Cup are now +400, while the Blues are +200 to reach the finals.
France is a favorite at +100, and although it’s going to be a whole another story if Cavani is fit to play, I am backing the Blues in case he is unavailable. Everything would go down on Luis Suarez and will be easier for the French defenders to focus on one world-class striker instead of two. Still, I wouldn’t be surprised with a draw as Uruguay showed they can defend successfully.
The Pick: France to win (+100)
