DC United vs. New England Revolution Prediction, Preview and Odds - 10/20/21

New England can get within three points of the MLS regular season record when it travels to D.C. United on Wednesday night. The Revolution need to win just two of their final four games to tie the record that LAFC set in 2019. D.C. United desperately needs to come away with a win, as it is just one point clear of NYCFC in the playoff race.

New England continues to roll

New England has been the best team in the MLS this season and has a chance to put itself in the record books before the regular season concludes. The Revolution only need to win two of their final four matches to tie the regular-season points record set by LAFC in 2019. They have a 20-6-4 record, putting them 18 points ahead of Nashville at the top of the Eastern Conference. New England has not lost a match since Aug. 28 when it dropped a 2-0 final at NYCFC. Since then, the Revolution have won five matches and tied twice.

They are coming off one of those draws, as they played to a 2-2 final against Chicago on Saturday. Wilfrid Kaptoum opened the scoring with a goal two minutes after halftime, but the Fire tied the match two minutes later. Gustavo Bou put New England ahead for the second time in the 76th minute, but the Revolution gave up the final goal of the match with two minutes remaining in regulation. New England has scored multiple goals in four straight matches and has tallied 30 shots on targets in its previous five matches. The Revolution have also allowed 30 shots on target in those contests, though.

D.C. United needs this game

D.C. United is in a must-win situation on Wednesday night. It is currently in sixth place in the Eastern Conference table with 41 points, but Montreal also has 41 points. NYCFC and the Red Bulls are both just one point back in the standings, though, so a loss on Wednesday could knock D.C. United out of the playoff picture. It has only lost once in its last four matches, which came in a 2-1 loss at Orlando on Oct. 2. D.C. United has picked up wins over Cincinnati and Minnesota, while also playing to a 0-0 draw against Nashville—that match was on Saturday.

Nashville has played to four straight draws. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid made two saves for DC United, who is now 4-0-1 in its last five home games. The club is led by Ola Kamara, who leads the MLS in goals. He missed a shot from outside the box in the third minute of the match, as his attempt went ringing off the post. D.C. United was without Paul Arriola, who suffered a groin injury during pre-match warmups with the United States national team last week. The Black-and-Red are going to follow this match with contests against NYCFC and the New York Red Bulls.

Pick: (D.C. United PK -119)

While New England would enjoy getting into a position to tie the MLS regular-season record, D.C. United has a motivational edge heading into this match. It needs to pick up at least a draw on Wednesday in order to maintain its playoff position. The Black-and-Red have been one of the strongest attacking teams in the MLS this season. They have been outstanding at home, especially in their recent contests. D.C. United has gone 4-0-1 in its last five contests at home and the fans are going to be excited about this match.

Total (Over 3)

I have no interest in backing the under in a New England match right now. The Revolution have not only been generating a ridiculous amount of scoring chances, but their defense has been leaky. They have allowed 30 shots on target over their last five matches. New England’s last four matches have featured 17 combined goals. D.C. United has been one of the top attacking teams in the MLS and has the top scorer in the country. This should be one of the highest-scoring matches of the week.
