English Premier League Soccer - Bournemouth vs. Newcastle United, 7/1/20 - Preview, Prediction & Odds

Hoping to snatch all three points to squeeze themselves out of the relegation zone, 18th-placed Bournemouth will be hosting 14th-placed Newcastle United, who just lost their FA Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City. Kick-off - at 13:00 PM ET on Wednesday, July 1.

Bournemouth Drop Three In Row

Bournemouth recorded their third consecutive defeat in the Premier League after dropping a 1-0 decision against Wolverhampton Wanderers away at Molineux Stadium on Wednesday. The Cherries were outshot 10-4, but failed to register a single attempt on target, with substitute Arnaut Danjuma delivering Bournemouth’s only shot of the second half after the team was already trailing 1-0 following Wolves’ 60th-minute goal. The South Coast club has now gone winless for six straight league contests (D1 L5), sitting 18th in the standings (W7 D6 L18), level on points with 17th-placed West Ham United, but with an inferior goal difference.

English striker Callum Wilson leads Bournemouth with eight Premier League markers, but will not face Newcastle United due to suspension. Englishman Aaron Ramsdale, meanwhile, occupies the 4th position in the league's goalkeeper chart, having turned away 104 shots so far this year. He has recorded four clean sheets in 30 appearances this season and allows a goal every 57 minutes on average. The Cherries are tied-3rd in least goals buried this term (29), 4th in least shots attempted per game (10.1), 14th in ball possession (46.6%) and 13th in passing accuracy (76.2%).

Newcastle Tie With Villa, Lose To City

Mixed emotions highlighted last week for Newcastle United, who extended their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four games (W2 D2) after earning a 1-1 draw against second-bottom Aston Villa at St. James’ Park on Wednesday before failing to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup for the first time since 2000 following a 2-0 quarter-final defeat against Manchester City at the same venue. Dwight Gayle scored the only snipe for the Magpies during last week’s pair of games, with the team now sitting 14th in the EPL standings with a W10 D9 L12 record, 12 points above the drop-zone.

With five snipes buried this season in the league, English midfielder Jonjo Shelvey tops Newcastle’s scoring chart. Goalie Martin Dubravka, meanwhile, sits at the top of England’s top tier with 119 saves. He has picked up 10 clean sheets in 31 contests this year and gives up a goal every 66 minutes of play. The Magpies have netted the tied-3rd lowest number of goals so far during the current campaign (29), while delivering the 15th highest amount of shots per game (10.5). The team is bottom of the league in ball possession (41.3%) and 4th from the bottom in passing accuracy (74.6%).

Prediction

Bournemouth have had little luck lately, going without a victory for six Premier League contests in a row (D1 L5). The Cherries can, however, get themselves out of the bottom-three with a win here and will look at this fixture with utmost importance, especially with games against Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City still approaching. Bournemouth have not beaten Newcastle United in their last four meetings (D2 L2), but have registered just one defeat in their past four EPL home games (W2 D1 L1). The Magpies have been excellent on their own turf during the calendar year of 2020, but have already dropped nine of their 15 away matches in the league this season (W4 D2 L9), failing to triumph in consecutive away games in the Premier League since January 2018.

Best bet:

Bournemouth to win (+140)
