German Bundesliga Soccer - Borussia Dortmund vs. Hoffenheim, 6/27/20 - Preview, Prediction & Odds

With the 2nd-place finish clinched for the season, Borussia Dortmund will play out their last home contest of the campaign, taking on Hoffenheim, who still battle for an automatic qualification for the group stage of the Europa League. Kick-off - at 9:30 AM ET on Saturday, June 27.

Dortmund Will Finish Second

Borussia Dortmund secured the 2nd-place finish in the Bundesliga this season with one game remaining after beating 3rd-placed RB Leipzig with a count of 2-0 away at Red Bull Arena last Saturday. 19-year-old Norwegian wunderkind Erling Haaland had a goalbound shot blocked at the start of the game, hit the crossbar in the second half, led all players with six shots and ended the contest, scoring both strikes, having now netted 13 times in 14 Bundesliga matches. BVB’s 84 goals in Germany’s top tier this year have also set a new Dortmund record for most markers in a single league season.

With 17 goals and 16 assists this year, English winger Jadon Sancho tops Borussia Dortmund’s scoring table. Goalie Roman Burki, meanwhile, is 18th in the Bundesliga with 62 saves. He has picked up 13 clean sheets in 30 outings this season and gives up a goal every 74 minutes of play. The Black-and-Yellows have buried the 2nd highest number of goals during the ongoing campaign (84) while delivering the joint-8th highest quantity of shots per contest (13.2). The team is 3rd in ball possession (58.5%) and 2nd in passing accuracy (86.8%).

Hoffenheim Clinch European Spot

Hoffenheim guaranteed themselves a place in the Europa League next season after clinching a top-seven finish with a 4-0 home victory against Union Berlin at PreZero Arena last Saturday. Highly dominant in the first 45 minutes of the game, the hosts scored three times in the first half, adding another marker in the following frame, with Ihlas Bebou, Andrej Kramaric, Munas Dabbur, and Christoph Baumgartner all on the scoresheet. Currently sitting 7th with a W14 D7 L12 record, Die Kraichgauer qualify for the second qualifying round of the Europa League, but could still bank a straight pass to the competition’s group stage by overtaking Wolfsburg for the 6th position in the Bundesliga, with the Wolves presently being on level points with Hoffenheim, but with a better goal difference.

Despite missing 14 games through injury, Croatian forward Kramaric still leads the Sinsheim side with eight Bundesliga markers. Goalie Oliver Baumann, meanwhile, sits 6th in the league with 98 saves. He has posted six clean sheets in 29 appearances this season and allows a goal every 53 minutes on average. Hoffenheim have scored the 8th highest number of goals in Germany’s top-flight this term (49) while taking the joint-8th highest amount of shots per game (13.2). The team is 5th in ball possession (51.8%) and 6th in passing accuracy (81.6%).

Prediction

Unlike Borussia Dortmund, who will finish the current Bundesliga season in the 2nd place behind champions Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim have still plenty to play for. Die Kraichgauer have already clinched a place in the second qualifying round for the Europa League next season, but can still improve to an automatic pass to the group stage of the competition if they manage to overleap Wolfsburg in the league standings during the last Matchday. Hoffenheim have already gone unbeaten against Dortmund in their last four encounters (W2 D2). But don’t count the Black-and-Yellows out just yet! Two losses in their past three home games aside, BVB have been solid on own turf for the whole season (W11 D3 L2) and have not lost a domestic fixture against Die Kraichgauer on the past seven tries in all competitions (W6 D1).
