New England Revolution vs. New York Red Bulls Prediction. Preview and Odds - 5/22/21

The Revolution are atop the Eastern Conference standings and they play host to a Red Bulls team that had their two-match winning streak snapped in their last match. The Red Bulls had won two in a row before suffering a shutout loss in their last match. The club had scored two goals and not conceded any in the two wins before losing to Philadelphia 1-0 in their last match. New York is in ninth place in the East with six points after five matches.

The Revolution were not overly impressive in their last match but still came away with a 1-0 win over the defending champion Columbus Crew. In six matches they have three wins, two draws, and a loss and have a two-point lead over Orlando in the Eastern Conference.

Last season, the Red Bulls beat the Revolution at home and they played to a draw in New England.

Two Losses

Not only did the Red Bulls lose to Philly 1-0 in their last match they also lost star defender Aaron Long for the season with a ruptured right Achilles tendon. The loss is not only big for the Red Bulls, but also for the U.S. Men’s National Team with the CONCACAF Nations League finals next month and the beginning of World Cup qualifying in September.

In the loss to Philadelphia, the Red Bulls were aggressive but only had one shot on target in the match where the time of possession was nearly even. Caden Clark and Cristian Cásseres Jr. have scored five of the Red Bulls five goals this season and Fabio has four assists. The New York Defense has played well as of late, as after conceding five goals in their first two matches they have only conceded one in their last three matches.

The Red Bulls have lost both of their road matches this season.FW Tim Barlow is questionable for this match with a quad injury.

No Place Like Home

In New England’s 1-0 win over Columbus in their last match, they won their third in three tries at home and already have surpassed last season's win total (2).

In the win over the Crew, Adam Buksa scored the lone goal in the 83rd minute. While the attack did not look very good the defense did holding Columbus to six shots and only one on target in a game that saw dead even possession for each club.

While New England is atop the Eastern Conference standings they only have a goal differential of +1.Buksa leads the club with two goals and four other players have one. Carles Gil leads them with three assists.New England has played great defense at home only conceding one goal in three matches on their pitch. MF Emmanuel Boateng and DF Christian Mafla are both questionable for this match with lower-body injuries.

Side: New England -125

The Revolution did not have an impressive match on the attack in their last match, but their D was solid in the 1-0 win over Columbus. That has been the narrative on the season, as their defense has only conceded six goals in six matches, but they have only scored seven. The Red Bulls had won two in a row before losing their last match. They are winless on the road this season (0-2) and they had scored four goals in winning the two matches before being shut out in their last match. I look for New England to play another strong match on the defensive side of the pitch and they will score at least one goal. They have won two of their three home matches by a 1-0 score and I think that will happen again, as they will win this match and stay perfect at home.

Total: Under 2.5

I am taking the Under in this match, as the Revolution have had issues on the attack and the Red Bulls were shut out in their last match. The New England defense has been great on the season only allowing six goals and they have only conceded one goal at home. The Red Bulls have also played solid defense as of late only conceding one goal in their last three matches. This match will be played mostly in the midfield and there will not be many scoring chances for each club. Because of that, the Under is the smart pick for this Eastern Conference encounter.
