Possible Landing Spots for Aaron Rodgers
by Bosun Akinpelu
The Green Bay Packers traded up and used their first-round pick in the NFL draft to select former Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. The move surprised a lot of people because Rodgers signed a $134 million contract extension 20 months ago and the Packers played in the NFC Championship game last season.
Due to the team’s decision to use a first-round pick on a quarterback, there is a lot of speculation that Rodgers won’t be in Green Bay for too long. Based on that, we have decided to take a look at some potential landing spots for the former Super Bowl MVP.
New England Patriots
The Patriots lost quarterback Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the offseason but they did not go after a quarterback in the draft. Head coach Bill Belichick likely wants to see what he has in Jarrett Stidham, but don’t be surprised to see him make a move for Rodgers if the Packers put him on the trade block.
Minnesota Vikings
This might seem like a stretch but if Brett Favre could put on a Vikings uniform, don’t be surprised if Rodgers does the same thing. The Vikings already have a good team, but there are a lot of people who aren’t sold on Kirk Cousins being the quarterback that will lead the franchise to its first Super Bowl. If Cousins struggles this season and the Vikings make another early playoff exit, there is a good chance that they go after Rodgers. However, they will need the Packers to be willing to trade him within the division to make it happen.
Denver Broncos
Broncos president John Elway was able to persuade Peyton Manning to play for Denver after he was released by the Indianapolis Colts. Rodgers is in a similar position and could be tempted to play in Denver if the Packers decide to move on from him.
Pittsburgh Steelers
The Steelers should have a healthy Ben Roethlisberger back in the lineup next season after he missed most of the 2019-20 campaign with an injury. However, there’s no telling if Roethlisberger how much longer Roethlisberger intends to play and the Steelers might make a move for Rodgers if Roethlisberger hangs it up after the season.
New Orleans Saints
This is similar to the Pittsburgh situation. Drew Brees signed a two-year extension with the team during the offseason but he has also agreed to become an analyst for NBC Sports after he retires and is likely going into his final season. With the Saints having a lot of weapons on the team, their window to win will still be open after Brees retires and the team could bring in Rodgers as his replacement if they want to remain Super Bowl contenders.
