How To Bet The Belmont Stakes

Betting on horse racing can be daunting. There are lots of terms and philosophies that can intimidate a first-time bettor. However, we’ve got a handy guide to Belmont Stakes betting and the wagers you can place. Here’s a quick primer:

  • Win: You win if your horse wins.
  • Place: You win if your horse runs first or second.
  • Third: You win if your horse runs first, second, or third.
  • Exacta: You win if your horses finish first and second in the correct order.
  • Trifecta: You win if your horses finish first, second, and third in the correct order.
  • Superfecta: You win if your horses finish first, second, third, and fourth in the correct order.

With exacta, trifecta, and superfecta bets, it’s important to know you can “box” horses and buy multiple combinations. A $1 exacta box of horses 1 and 2, for instance, would cost $2 instead of $1, but you’d have multiple combinations (1-2 and 2-1). Furthermore, a $1 trifecta box of horses 1, 2, and 3 would cost $6, but you’d have all six possible combinations of those three horses.

You can also play multi-race wagers such as daily doubles, Pick Threes, Pick Fours, Pick Fives, and the Pick Six. However, those costs can mount up quickly given the number of combinations involved, and that’s often a lot for a first-time horseplayer to handle. If Belmont Stakes betting is your initial foray into the horse racing world, we recommend you keep it simple.

The Importance Of The Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes caps off horse racing’s Triple Crown, the most well-known series of races in the sport. That series also includes the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. In its current incarnation, the Triple Crown boasts three races over a five-week span, and it’s been swept just 13 times.

Traditionally, the Belmont is the longest of the three races. Since 1926, its distance has been 1 1/2 miles. Many talented horses that have won the Derby and the Preakness have been tripped up by that route, giving the Belmont Stakes the moniker “the test of the champion.”

The list of racing immortals to have won the Belmont Stakes includes Secretariat, who did so by 31 lengths in 1973. His time of 2:24 flat is still a world record for that distance. Other notable Triple Crown winners include American Pharoah and Justify, who swept the series in 2015 and 2018, respectively.

Even when a Triple Crown is not on the line, though, the Belmont Stakes carries plenty of importance. In two of the last three years, the winner of the Belmont Stakes was crowned Champion 3-Year-Old Male at the Eclipse Awards. Essential Quality was voted the winner in 2021, and Arcangelo won the award in 2023.

More On The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival

In recent years, the Belmont Stakes has anchored a multiple-day festival of horse racing. The New York Racing Association moved several stakes races to Belmont week, leading to a smorgasbord of some of the highest-quality racing action we’ll see all year long.

Like the Belmont Stakes, the festival itself is headed to Saratoga. It starts on Thursday, June 6th, and ends Sunday, June 9th. Check back closer to the festival dates for more information on each day’s lineup of stakes races.

After the festival, horses move back to Aqueduct for a few weeks before Saratoga’s traditional summer meet begins in mid-July.
