Crochet and the Red Sox win on Opening Day
One of the top stories in Boston this summer will be the potential breakout of ace Garrett Crochet. This is Crochet’s first year with the Red Sox, and he has been dominant in spring training. The 6’6 southpaw threw 15.2 innings and had 30 strikeouts while allowing just a single run.
In Crochet’s career, both left and right-handed hitters have a combined OPS of below .640, and he has fared better against righties allowing just a .217 batting average. This is good news for him against the Rangers, who should trot out five right-handed hitters and two switch-hitters, giving him an edge despite what looks like a negative on the surface.
Could underpriced Phillies dominate on Opening Day?
Without a doubt, the Phillies will be a popular run-line pick for today as they are +118 against one of the worst teams (projected, at least) in the National League. Despite being on the road, the Phils have their ace on the mound today and a lineup full of right-handed hitters. That bodes well against MacKenzie Gore, a southpaw for the Nationals.
The interesting part about Gore is he actually struggles more against left-handed hitters in his career (.816 OPS allowed), which is great news for big bats Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper, should they get to hit with runners on base. With an edge both on the mound and in the batters’ box, the Phils have a great chance to cover the run-line at plus money today.
Mets start 2025 campaign as a valuable underdog
The revamped Mets come into 2025 brimming with expectations after an unexpected run to the NLCS last year and some major offseason additions including potential MVP candidate and certified stud Juan Soto. Another one of the more intriguing additions is Clay Holmes who will toe the rubber for the Amazin’s today. Holmes was dominant in the preseason notching a dazzling 0.93 ERA over 19.1 innings.
This line appears a touch off when you factor in that the Astros offense looks poised to take step back with the departure of Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. While Houston appears to have a slight edge on the hill today, Holmes could easily erase that if he is able to carry over his preseason success. We will roll with a much better New York offense at a nice underdog price.
