NCAAF Betting Odds
The college football season draws an immense amount of betting interest every year, and sportsbooks have no shortage of NCAAF odds and lines for players to bet on. The most ubiquitous of these are:
- Moneylines
- Spreads
- Totals
There’s no shortage of other lines available for college football fans to bet on, but the exact list can vary depending on the game in question and the state from which the player is connecting to their sportsbook.
NCAAF Moneylines
Moneylines are a very simple, straightforward way to bet on college football. If you bet on a team’s moneyline and they win the game, you win your moneyline bet. Each team has a fixed line reflecting their perceived chance to win a game.
College football moneyline odds, like most other odds at American sportsbooks, are expressed in the American format. Something like this:
- Washington Huskies (+180) at Michigan Wolverines (-220)
The number next to each team is their moneyline, reflecting their given odds of winning the game and the potential payout for moneyline bettors if they do. Odds of plus or minus 100 would indicate a truly even projection, where a winning $100 bet on either team would net $100 in profit.
Positive odds are given to the underdog in a matchup; the further they are from 100, the longer their odds. Winning a $100 bet on Washington’s moneyline (+180) would net $180 in profit (180/100 * $100).
Negative odds are given to the favorite in a matchup; the further they are from 100, the greater the expectation of victory. Winning a $100 bet on Michigan’s moneyline (-220) would net $45.45 in profit (100/220 * $100)
NCAAF Spreads
Spread betting is another common way to bet on college football games that isn’t too far removed from moneyline betting. It can offer players a more intriguing and flexible way to bet on games — especially ones where the moneyline itself isn’t particularly compelling.
Each college football game available for betting at a sportsbook will have an assigned spread at or around even odds. This might look like:
- Washington Huskies +5.5 (-110) vs. Michigan Wolverines -5.5 (-110)
The number assigned to each team is the spread: 5.5 points — in this case, favoring Michigan. A bet on the Wolverines to cover the spread is a bet on them to win by at least 6 points. A bet on the Huskies, on the other hand, is a bet on any other outcome. Whether they win outright or lose by 5 or fewer points doesn’t matter; either result covers the spread.
NCAAF Totals
Also known as over/under betting, totals are lines that allow players to bet on the overall number of points scored in a college football game. As with spread betting, sportsbooks set total lines around what they believe is the most likely number of points to be scored, giving each side of the total close to equal odds. For example:
- Washington Huskies vs. Michigan Wolverines O/U 55.5 (-115/-105)
Should the Huskies and Wolverines combine to score at least 56 points in their matchup, a $100 bet on the over (-115) would net $86.96 in profit. Should they fall short, a $100 bet on the under (-105) would net $95.24 in profit.
As far as the result of the total bet is concerned, only the overall total matters. Whether one team or the other scores the points isn’t relevant to the result of the bet.
Other NCAAF Lines
There’s no shortage of other lines available for college football fans who want to bet on more than the traditional options. Depending on their state of residence and sportsbook of choice, fans will find an array of markets ranging from alternate spread/total lines to player, team, and game props.
It’s worth noting that some states with legal sports betting disallow betting on player props in college sports. Be sure to check in with your state’s laws if you’re having trouble finding certain college football betting markets.
