Washington vs Michigan: The odds

Michigan enters the game favored by 4.5 points and a predicted combined score of 56.5, according to major sportsbooks. Can the Huskies defy the odds and send their conference out with a bang? Our Winners and Whiners experts have the insights you need, with expert College Football Playoff picks available for just $50.

Leading the Wolverines is quarterback J.J. McCarthy, throwing for 2,851 yards and 22 touchdowns. Ground game maestro Blake Corum adds 1,111 rushing yards and a whopping 25 touchdowns.

For Washington, Michael Penix Jr. fires rockets through the air with 4,648 yards and 35 touchdowns. In the backfield, Dillon Johnson pounds the rock for 1,162 yards and 16 touchdowns, though he battled injuries this week before declaring himself ready for the big dance.

Washington vs Michigan Free Pick

by Michael Briggs

This is the game you’ve all been waiting for! The 2024 CFP National Championship features two surprising yet intriguing title contenders in Washington and Michigan.

Michigan has endured criticism stemming from its sign-stealing scandal, as well as skepticism of its talent level due to its two previous losses in the College Football Playoff. Washington has also drawn its fair share of criticism, as it won several games by the slimmest of margins. While both programs undoubtedly carry chips on their shoulders, no one can argue that these teams aren’t legit.

A lot of pre-game commentary has focused on the matchup between Michigan’s bruising ground game and Washington’s inferior defense. While bottling up Corum is priority number one for the Huskies, it’s worth noting that Texas and Oregon (twice) gashed them on the ground and still lost. Washington’s defensive marks aren’t all sub-par, either, as it ranked 25th in opponent yards per attempt and 29th in opponent QB rating.

The flip side of this matchup is that the Wolverines have not faced an offense of Washington’s caliber. They held their own against Ohio State and Penn State, but neither of those teams moved the football like UW. The Crimson Tide were also a bit too one-dimensional with Milroe under center. As talented as Michigan’s pass rush is, it will face its stiffest challenge of the season on Monday against a Dawgs’ offensive line that won the Joe Moore Award for the best unit in the country. Washington gave up just 11 sacks in 14 games despite averaging more than 37 passing attempts per game. It certainly proved it against Texas’ d-line, which features several future pros.

Plus, this isn’t the first imposing defense the Huskies have faced, as they played four games against teams in the Top 26 in defensive success rate. Pennix Jr. was unfazed, throwing for 1,383 yards and a 9:2 TD:INT ratio in those contests. On Monday, he will get rid of the football quickly, as he has all season, putting pressure on McCarthy and the Wolverines’ special teams to play mistake-proof football. That may be all it takes for the Dawgs to knock off their future Big Ten rival.

While a national championship victory is not out of the question for the underdog Huskies, I’m taking the points at +4.5.
